Shooting with disco strobe light + 7D

Hi!

I am wondering if it is possible to shoot a strobe light scene with a canon 7d/5d?

I have experienced that it looks like it's to slow to capture the strobe light and thus only affecting half the frame(like when you're filming and people around are taking snapshots with a flash).

Is there any way you can make it work? Really high shutter speed?

Longer strobe duration, if you can control it. Faster shutter speed will work, but you might also miss strobe flashes because it's set too fast. It's a tricky one!

No, there's no way to make it work. CMOS sensors with rolling shutters are always going to do that. The only way you could make it work is if the duration of the strobelight lasts longer than 1/60th of a second.

A CCD camera is the better choice for this job.

strobes + 7D = sucks ass
I wouldn't even waste my time trying to slow the strobe down... either ditch the strobe or use a camera without a rolling shutter

EDIT.....DANG!! Barry beat me to it :)

You might not get the "look" you are going for but you will get a "look". I hate the rolling shutter flash thing but I think the public is slowly getting exposed to it and soon it will be a used/asked for "look". When they fix the problem people will ask for a hack to turn it back off. Just a theory.

It wasn't a problem here nor here, both shot on the 5D. I'm theorizing that the key is to not make the strobe your primary light source. In other words, it shouldn't be the brightest light in the frame. This seems to cover up the issue.

I'm facing the same dilemma at the moment.
