Here is an email I sent to Philip Bloom about an uncompressed recording option that has a lot of people talking.

Here is the Info:

Philip,

Here are some interesting links about capturing 7D footage uncompressed. People online seem pretty excited about this software. Look into it, it is supposed to make 7D footage good enough for theatre projection.

Please do a write up about this. I read your Nanoflash article and you said you wanted this capability.

Sincerely,
Andrew

Interesting. But the 7D is already good enough for theater projection. Maybe you mean good enough for green screen shooting?
Shane Hurbut is shooting a feature on the 7D and 5D right now as we speak. For those who don't know him, he's the DP in Terminator Salvation among other Hollywood features.

Not just better for keying but also for correction and grading.

I think a lot of people are maybe there are other threads about it on DVX user already? I know I am but I haven't been looking into it yet. Perhaps a reason for the lack of overwhelming response is the fact that there still is aliasing on the HDMI, and the hoops you need to jump through to get it? The added cost of the recording module too. Scarlet isn't too far so those few thousand might be better saved...

It seems like too much to go through for what you get. Not discounting the end result, just the process to get there.

I might be more interested if the upcoming magic lantern firmware (hack) were to give us more control over the HDMI out. At the very least removing the red dot!

Thanks for posting the info though.

Yeah shorty....there has been a lot of talk about this here @ DVXuser already. But thanks for posting.

I know that this has been mentioned before but no one seems to be interested. For me, the cost is cheap. The Matrox box only costs $550 (on the Matrox site) and add $250 for the software. If you have a Mac laptop (which I do), you are in good to go. Based on the Syndicate reports, the use this software (in addition to the use of softer cine lenses or diffusion filters such as the Schneider Classic Softs), result in a dramatic reduction in artifacts such as moire.

Here is a commercial shot with the software that is playing in European cinemas. It also shows the CGI potential of the 7D (the yellow car). Link: http://www.syndicate.se/Default.aspx?Id=297

It is a little strange that the reduced resolution of the final image is actually less pixelated than the regular 1080p right out of the camera. This shows you how strong the compression on the 7D really is.

Oh…I’m sure folks are interested. I’ve downloaded and posted that commercial about a month ago (maybe in another forum). I’m definitely looking into all of these alternatives. I’m finally going to purchase this cam on Wednesday this week and want to know the cheapest option of capturing uncompressed.

Their software is only $250.00? For some reason I missed that (and figured it was a lot more).

Ya, its windows only but they are working on a Mac version and improvements to remove the red dot and extract full 1920x1080 from the HDMI (Magic Lantern may help with this when it is released).

There are rumors that the Canon 1Ds Mark IV will have full HD output through HDMI which would make these cams even more powerful. Just rumors at this point though.
