Shooting RAW on Canon EOS M

I'm interested in the possibility of shooting RAW on my EOS M, whether Magic or Tragic Lantern.

Since much of the information is a bit dated from when this was a hot topic, a few questions...

First, are the Sandisk 95mbps cards the only option or would these Lexar (or other brands cheaper than Sandisk) cut it?

Also, is the "Pink Dot" remover program still a necessary step?

Lastly, is using the Cineform codec (free download from site) defeating the purpose of RAW or is the compression with Cineform not too bad/retains enough quality?

Although not the same build, these questions should be applicable from the 650D RAW process.../thanks

Don't know much about shooting raw on the EOSM, but I have shot using all "I" frames at a boosted bit rate with Tragic Lantern.

All "I" frames eliminates the blocky artifacts that results from compression that spans multiple frames. I can shoot it at "full" HD (full for Canon H264).

Here is a recent test that I did with such settings on the EOSM and with the Fujian 35mm CCTV lens.

The Tragic Lantern forum is slightly active, with a special section on the EOSM.

I haven't checked this thread in awhile...Thanks for the reply.

Your video looks great. I do have Tragic Lantern set up for the M and need to try this.
The settings; all "I" frames at what number and/or setting? Anything else?

Thanks.

In regards to the read and write rate of your SD card, the DIGIC 5 processor tops out at 40 mb/s in regards to data transmission on its' SD card bus. This means that anything higher than that is actually a waste of money. The guys over at ML maintain a spreadsheet that keeps all this information. Additionally, you can find hardware tests/reviews over at the hardware and accessories sub-forum on ML's forum.

Thanks for that...

I have Sandisk 30MB/s cards.

I may be ok depending on what bitrate settings.
I don't think I will pursue RAW, but will consider what h-munster suggested as lack of artifacts is good-enough for me.

..but will look into your links further.

Thanks for the kind word on my lens/camera test video.

Things are too hectic for me right now to give a detailed response. However, here is the article that turned me on to Tragic Lantern and to getting all-I frames on my Canon cameras. Tragic Lantern 1 is still the version that gives the most control of H264 (on the 600D/T3i), while the later builds offer fewer controls.

On the other hand, I think that the later builds are the only ones that work on the EOSM.

That's interesting. Thanks for the TL link. I didn't realize that anybody was trying to keep TL alive after the ML team shut it down. I've been using ML on the EOS-M and find it more stable than the TL builds I was using earlier in the year, but I am not really keeping up on the current coding or politics of the ML/TL development.
