Shooting on the beach

Guys,

I'm going to be spending a lot of time on the beach in the upcoming months, shooting surfers and etc... does anybody know the best way to keep salt and sand off the cam? A DP buddy of mine just says to make sure to wipe down the screen everyday, which is no problem, but I'm a little worried about the rest of the cam as well... I've got rocket air, cleaning swabs and solution, is this going to be enough you think? Thanks ahead of time to anybody who has experience with this!

you should get a protective cover that avoids rain and dust. my petrol camera bag came with one.

Thanks DCRIN, any suggestions, besides a 200 dollar portabrace rain cover? Also, if it covers everything but the lens... do I just need to constantly clean the lens? thanks!

I'd put a filter on the end, if you don't already, because the sea spray with gunk up your glass pretty fast, depending on the wind. Also, the gunk that gets on the lens doesn't just wipe off, so bring a cleaning kit that includes a liquid cleaner.

As for a cover, if you don't mind making something yourself, you could try this kind of thing. A place like Walmart will sell clear vinyl sheets in a variety of thicknesses that you could cut and cement together. If it's really blowing, you'll be glad you have your camera completely shielded.

I had my dvx's out for 9 months in central america shooting from the beach. I used the kata cover and that worked fine. Just be careful to avoid sand and spray from the surf and u should be good. I did however only once run into some problems with moisture and ended up with the dreaded red-x. The simple solution was to leave the tape door open for a day while my camera sat inside my hotel room.

Where and what are you working on exactly? I'm interested to hear more about your project.

Hey, thanks for the advice guys. I love this bb. Homemade covers are a great idea, and Rick Schmidt would be proud - however I'm a little worried about the gamble with my terrible craft skills and a 3500 dollar camera... I'll just budget in a cover, I figured I'd need one. I appreciate the second opinion.

Surfshooter, if your screen name mimics your experience, I'd love to talk to you. my email is godsgreatesthits@yahoo.com - or I can shoot you an email if you put it up.

:) I mentioned the DIY route because I thought you were price sensitive. Since you have the budget, definitely get a real cover.

Also, you can PM by clicking someone's user name. A menu should appear and the second option down is "Send a private message to [the user's name]".

Good luck with your shoot!
