Shooting Feature, best way to log?

Brandon Rice

Distributed Producer
Hey all, I'll be working on a feature in March, and we'll be shooting with two HVX's. I was wondering how the best way to log footage would be. I am afraid of going through every take in post and logging them manually (this is what I did on my last shoot) so, any ideas would be helpful. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

I'd go P2 CMS or P2 Log Pro. Very nice organizational features- of course you need to be in sync with the camera dept as well. (we show some goo strategies on our DVD btw.)

Well we still do it the old fashioned way. The Continuity person logs the timecode at the end of each take ( we can interpolate what the beginning timecode was from the last stop)... along with Director comments. Then we make an EDL (Edit Decision List) only from the takes the Director wants to see (or "Print"). With the EDL we can then quickly Batch Capture only the good takes into the NLE computer. That works pretty well for us. It would save you the many long hours of watching all the takes, most of which you'll never use of course... and keep only the takes that have consideration.

If you had an active and responsible script supervisor, you could use P2CMS to totally manage the clips and the takes. Won't do you much good when you get to Avid though, as Avid ignores the metadata (last I knew).

But you definitely could save yourself a ton of hassle by using the User Clip Name function; Avid does support that. So each time you start a scene you could load in metadata that says "scene 5 take "; then the camera will automatically add a number to the end (making the name "scene 5 take 1") and will increment it for each new take (so it becomes "scene 5 take 2", "scene 5 take 3", etc). And those names will show up in Avid.

But -- to get this power, you have to have a dedicated person who will keep the metadata updated in the camera. If they don't update it, your production will be thrown for a little bit of a loop.

Right... so, I'm basically stuck with the option of dedicating a person to be constantly changing scene names, or going through them myself in post and labeling them...

I think I might end of having to do the latter... appreciate the options though guys.
