shooting above ISO1600

I've been hearing that i shouldnt be shooting ext. night shots above ISO 1600. I'm going to be doing some camera test regardless but waiting on lenses so cant do that yet. My curiosity is killing me so guys please dont hit me with the "go test yourself" lol.

All the lenses I've ordered are 1.8s and considering i'll be shooting not above 125 shutter speed.

Will I be seeing unacceptable noise in the blacks?

By the way i've been shooting on red and 35 so ISO 1600 is a Godsend to me as it is. Just curious really.

I don't have a link to the thread, but someone did a test with the lens cap on at every ISO setting. Could someone drop a link to that thread?

Should be fine, i get some decent night footage as long as you have some light with my D90.

You will get some grain if the light is weak, but some of that can be taken out with magic bullet etc...

Im not sure what the ISO was on this because we cant adjust it manually on the D90, but these shots (starting at the 2 min mark) were all outside in the dark with only some parking lot lights as practical lighting.

Shot with a 28mm 2.8 (i needed something a bit wider than my 50mm 1.8 and since i only had an hour to plan, write and shoot this I needed to work quickly)

Through limited testing, I would push 1600 if it is a "get the shot or nothing at all" situation. It would not be my first choice for something narrative or meant to be pretty looking.

That said, when downrezzed to 720p or (gasp!) DVD the noise wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I highly recommend you check this video out. This was all shot at 1600-3400. It looks amazingly clean with the available light.

Yeah but

Yeah but

That video looks great, but keep in mind that compression (even Vimeo's which usually looks great) REALLY hides the noise. I know what 6400 ISO footage looks like on both the 5d and 7d, and personally it is unacceptable for normal use. BUT, when you upload it to youtube or vimeo, it hides A LOT of the noisy footage.

Understood. But download it. It's very clean. It's also above what the OP asked about (meaning above ISO 1600). ISO 6400 might be a stretch as you suggested however.

Edit: Wow...i just realized how dark it looks when watching it on Vimeo here @ DVXUser. It's no where near this dark when you download it.

So the end result is run some good noise reduction. Raw images without noise reduction at 1600 iso have a lot of noise too. Zero noise 1600-3200 footage isn't gonna happen but noise reduction can actually make this footage look REALLY good.
