Which brings up yet another interesting point...Without Will Ferrell would anyone care?
For a feature film?
Can you name one? Mike Figgis is the only one I've ever heard of doing it.
That's the point. Fireproof looks fantastic, it looks like a "movie" -- but it's unwatchable. The acting and dialogue are simply too horrible to be believed. I almost thought George Lucas must have directed it.
If you're talking about some $3,000 running-around-in-your-backyard, friends-as-actors type of thing, shot on nights and weekends over the course of six days... no, the Red would be the totally wrong tool for that, and the situation would be reversed. No way could you pull that off on a Red, nor would you want to even try, the 40-pound behemoth would prevent you from doing it.
I often have to double check and see if I'm on the 7D forum or the Red forum when I'm reading these posts.
Too much camera movement means bad rolling shutter artifacts. Here's a crazy question (or not)..but...could a movie like Slumdog Millionaire be shot on a camera like the 7D?
well quite frankly, you just cant DO alot of things with a 7D. You cant monitor on Stedicam, you can barely monitor for focus, and forget about a video village, Waveforms, or any kind of scopes....
480P is not quite enough to pull focus for HD. Unfortunately, modern Canon lenses are coarsely marked, and pulling with a measuring tape isn't exactly efficient. In fact a lot of the EF lenses, actually go past infinity, and are tough to match up, so marks on a FF are moot.
To be honest, over the course of weeks shooting a feature you will just get exhausted dealing with the issues. barry's skateboard analogy was about right.
Your sig (the Coppola quote) and your opinion seem to be at odds....
...or you could hire a little fat girl from Ohio.
So. I just finished producing a feature shot all 5d and 7d. The film looks incredible. The day after the feature was done the dp was contacted by janusz kaminski in order to come on the set of a new Reese witherspoon movie and teach Janusz how to use the cameras. Just food for thought.
The other cameras on set weren't RED.
