7D Shooting 7D for video, Panasonic HPX170 for sound... best frame rates?

I am shooting a short on my friends 7D @ 1080 w/ 23.98

I want to record audio separately on my HPX170, but I'm not sure what res and frame rate to shoot with. I want to use standard def to allow more space on my P2 card, but is there anything I should be warned of before doing this?

Also, what is the benefit of editing on a 23.98 timeline as a opposed to shooting 23.98 then editing 29.97?

Sound doesn't have a "frame rate", so you can just use DV mode on the HPX170, at any frame rate, it won't matter. Drag the resulting audio MXF files over to your NLE and they should work.

If you're shooting 23.976, you should unquestionably edit 23.976. Using a so-called 29.97 (which, I presume, you mean 59.94 interlaced) will mean that all your titles and transitions will be rendered in interlaced mode instead of natively progressive. Edit in 23.976, and then if you need a 60i version for delivery, render that out at the end.

Doesn't matter -- you're just looking for the audio, right? You could shoot 24p, 24pa, 30p, 60i -- none of it will make any difference to the audio.

But, to keep things simple, you might as well go 24pA.

In fact, if space isn't THAT much of a concern, you might consider running it in 720/24pN, that way you could use the camera for a second angle and not just as an audio recorder.
