Hey,

Could someone tell me the best way to get a 2.35:1 look on a Nikon D5100? I want to shoot a feature with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Is it primarily done in post by cropping?

You can crop easily in post, but that's no the main issue.

The issue is FRAMING properly while you are shooting. Some sort of guidelines would help in that, either electronically (through a monitor that offers it) or via some sort of sticker to the camera LCD.

Have a look at Cinematographer Pro from ControlMyNikon: http://www.controlmynikon.com/p/cinematographer-pro.html. Works very well with the D7000, can't remember the differences for the D5100. It allows you to tether your camera to a laptop/tablet pc as a field monitor with a bunch of features (still records on camera though). It will crop the preview feed from the camera so that you can frame in 2.35:1. You still have to crop in post, of-course.
