Shoot in 24p/final cut time line?

Hi,

I shot in 24P standard, not anamorphic. Now when I put the video into FCP I get distortion lines every now and then, I have my timeline set at DV NTSC 48KHz - 24, is that the correct setting? or should it be DV NTSC 48KHz - 23.98? or another.

Thanks!:crybaby:

if you shot 24p, you should edite on a 29.98 timeline which is DV NTSC 48KHz. (when you capture)
the only time you would edite on a 23.98 timeline is when you shoot 24pA (Advance)

Did you mean "not advanced" rather than "not anamorphic?" 24pA stands for "24p Advanced," which means that there's a different pulldown used when it's recorded to tape. "Anamorphic" has to do with 16:9 aspect ratio compressed into a 4:3 frame.

Now, as for post, if you shot in 24p standard, I'm going to assume that you did not remove the pull down in Cinema Tools. Both 24p modes record at 29.97. 24pA allows FCP to easily remove the pulldown during capture, in which case you'd edit in a 23.98 time line. 24p standard, however, has to be captured at 29.97 without pulldown removal. And unless you use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown, you'll be editing in a 29.97 time line. And editing 24p standard in a 29.97 time line means that you will have to deal with the interlaced frames in the cadence.

im learning so much today, yeah, i shot in 24p standard, would you suggest in the future shooting it in 24pA and editing in 23.98 time line? Is there a large difference in the final product, or will they both look pretty similar?

If you want to work in 24p, use Advanced. 24p standard was created for folks editing with software that cannot deal with 23.98 projects, but who still want the "24p look."

To work with 24pA, after you shoot: set your capture to DV NTSC 48kHz with Advanced Pulldown Removal. Then set your sequence settings to 23.98 and off you go.

thanks alot ryvac, i think thats the second jam you helped me out of today, this is a good community.
haha no problem, I actually learned it from C2V

I like to shoot 24pA because I feel like there's less hassle during the editing process. but I still shoot 24p when I need to mix 60i footage.

24pA in my opinion is easier to work with, but keep in mind that 60i, 30p and normal 24p footage go in the 29.98 timeline and the 24pA goes on 23.97... So you can't mix all that footage with 24pA. You don't need cinema tools to remove the advanced pulldown on 24pA... If you go into the capture settings on the right of the capture window, select the one that says "ADV PULLDOWN REMOVAL" or something like that... Now correct me if I'm wrong, but 24p normal doesn't have any advanced pulldown correct? Also, what is the candence? (sorry for stealing the thread!)

No, but you need it to remove the pulldown from 24p standard.

Both 24p and 24pA have pulldown, just different flavors. Cadence literally means the repeating pattern. The pulldown cadence for 24p standard is 3:2. For 24pA, it's 2:3:3:2. This will explain it all:
