shoot HD monitor DV or standard def composite ?

i'd like to shoot in HD (probably 720p24). while shooting, i'd like to use my macbook for preview. mostly for framing, focusing etc. Often it will be used because the director cannot be near the camera. the macbook is the only possible device i can use for preview.

given i want to shoot in hd, will i be able to monitor in SD or DV on the laptop?

does the dv out on the camera function while shooting? does it output in the shooting format or can it downconvert to dv as we shoot?

do the composite outputs work while shooting? they would have to be standard def i assume.

the idea is to use FW in or get a USB ntsc video in device (small).

thanks for any input.

I have a macbook pro and Im also intereste in the same thing. The Dv Rack looks good, but you have to run it in windows using bootcamp. Ive teste the DV version No problem, but wating on the soon to be available HD solution.

As far as I know, you cannot output via firewire anything other than the resolution you are shooting. DV/DVCPRO/DVCPORO50/DVCPROHD,
DV is easy, there are several ways to view a DV stream on your monitor, DVCPRO formats are where the challeges arise.

Also, I believe that there will be a limit to the length of your firewire which means that the director will indeed need to be near the camera if you want to view via firewire in HD
