FS7: Shogun Inferno with FS7, Early Impressions

4K/60p should be there, but I can't confirm...not sure how many cameras are going to take advantage of the 2K/240p though...or even the 4K/60p actually.

They could have probably milked the Shogun Flame for a bit more and released the Inferno next year.

I *think* according to their site that 4K 60P and HD 240P are future updates...
I own a pair of Ninja Blades and like them so I am not bashing Atomos, but weren't there some features promised for the previous model that never actually happened and people were unhappy?
Anyone know if it can do the 4K to HD downscale like the Odyssey does that makes such nice HD footage?

I think CinemaDNG is still in beta for the original Shogun...
Pretty sure the Inferno don't do the 4K to 2K/HD... (that is a killer feature).

High frame rates... 2K 240p and 4K 60p (or is that there already).

Those rates are possible with RAW. The 4K60P is possible through HDMI, though the FS7 drops to UHD at that frame rate.

Sheesh.. I could have waited two weeks and spent $300 less. Why would they drop the price so soon? Very curious to know why.

People are still waiting for DCI on the original shogun - it was promised on the Shogun - never delivered, I believe it was promised again for the Flames - but not its only for the Inferno....

Don't feel bad. Now it's back to $1995 again. Short term price drop for unknown reason

Interesting.. I wonder if someone changed the price in error and then discovered it when I contacted them asking about exchanging mine for the lower price?

The price drop was affirmed at other places so probably not...unless it was a mistake made by Atomos signaling the change.

I've seen that sometimes companies drop prices to maybe get a few sales and then they go back up again.

"this is not an official Atomos price move. I believe this is an NAB NY show special. I don't imagine it will be available for very long."

From the horses mouth. Possibly take with a grain of something.

Well I must state for the record, that I am impressed with B&H of New York. I wrote them a note about this, saying that I had just bought the unit at $1995 and then a few days later, the price drops $300. On Sunday, they replied that they are issuing a refund for that amount. On Monday, my Paypal account showed a $300 refund from BH Photo. Wow! This is why I stay with B&H all these years. They are as loyal to their customers as their customers are loyal to them. Thank you, B&H!

Just to let you know the new Inferno fw Release 8.12 deals with the "magenta banding" in shadows of AtomHDR monitoring mode (through some changes to EOTF).

Yes, I got the notice this morning and upgraded the Inferno. Nice fix!

Only issue that I see is a magenta outline around some edges on the Shogun screen, but not on the client monitor connected to its HDMI output. This outline looks like focus assist, but that is turned off. I put in a note to Mark at Atomos about it.

They haven't fixed the jaggies in 60P mode either. But I seldom record anything in 60P.

Mark - wasn't the jaggies fixed with the previous fw update (8.11)?

And a general question: I'm still at the 8.0; can I update straight to the newest 8.12 firmware, or should I install the 8.1 and 8.11 first? In other words - are Atomos upgrades cumulative? Thanks,

Piotr

Piotr, you might be thinking of the interlace problem with 50P recording. This is a display issue which does not affect recording.

Cumulative upgrades seem to be an artifact of the 1990s. I remember having to update color prepress software by running a series of patch files in sequence. However, I have not run into that today. The best source would be Atomos, but I would not be surprised if you could jump straight to 8.12. I highly recommend this update, as it fixes a major monitoring issue with that magenta banding.

I got the Extension unit for the FS7 this weekend and the V-lock batteries arrived Tuesday. Very impressed with the quality of the batteries and charger! Seems like real pro gear, at a China price.

It took a bit of researching to enable RAW recording. Camera was in Custom mode at the time and RAW was greyed out, but a quick Google resulted in the answer: CINE EI mode.

Initial observations is that image quality is very good. Didn't see any banding or noise issues, even when I pull up the shadows in post.

Shogun Inferno does have a bug with RAW input as it pertains to output on a HDMI monitor via it's HDMI out: the image is slightly scrambled and repeated, and has a magenta bar along the bottom of the screen. Doesn't affect recording though. Just makes using a client monitor no go.

HFR only has two settings in RAW, and the camera MUST be in 2K scan mode: 120 and 240P. Using the fastest recommended drive on the Atomos compatibility list for 4K and HFR modes, the Sandisk Xtreme, Shogun throws up a "Skippy" when recording starts. Have to put in a ticket about that.

Ergonomics is a bit improved with the counterweight effect, but the Sigma 50-100 lens still makes it front heavy. Holding the front handle with the right hand is still a pain in the forearm for long periods. Better with both hands, left hand on the lens. It's a beast to carry around. Feels almost like I'm cramming ten pounds of crap in a five pound bag. Reminds me of the photo floating around the internet, of the absurdly pimped out camera. It must be a good 30" from matte box to the back or the unit now.

Didn't notice the banding on a white wall on the Shogun screen that I get in HDMI and SDI inputs with pre-debayered signals, in RAW input. Seems to have more fine differentiation of colors.

I'm waiting to see how the 160wH batteries run for. I'm thinking this would be a good solution for the Shogun's power and shedding those short run time batteries. I need to find a Hirose to barrel cable that would go from the back of the extension unit to the Shogun.

One more thing: there is no recording indicator for RAW. The VF says "Standby" in green, even though the Shogun has started recording when pressing the button on the handgrip. My workaround was to enable internal XAVC plus RAW, so that the "REC" indicator appears. Otherwise, it's impossible to know the status of recording.

That's my initial findings. Have to play with it more. Had a very busy day at work.

Thanks for the write-up, Mark - your observations are consistent with my own. The only thing I didn't check is the HDMI pass-through signal being scrambled by Inferno when recording from SDI RAW on the XDCA.

Piotr

Mark - now that you have the XDCA adapter and can hook up your Inferno to the RAW SDI output, I'd like to ask you a question: as you have noticed, one must set the camera to the Cine EI mode in order to activate RAW output; also one of the S-log curves must be selected. My questions to you:

- how do you explain what is said about the FS7 RAW being linear in the light of the obligatory S-log2/3 gamma selection?
- some people (like Alister Chapman here) say that it's the Shogun which applies S-log to the linear RAW footage, and it's S-log3 "by default"; if that's so how do one make Shogun to "apply" S-log2 before encoding to Prores/DNxHR?

Piotr

Just wondering. How is the FS7+XDCA+external recorder PRORES 422 vs internal XAVC-I ( 29.xfps and 59.95fps ) at SLOG3 cine.ei ?

does the PRORES file has a lot of noise ?

In my initial testing, it looks clean. Haven't noticed any banding issues in the mid tones either.

I did discover a caveats when recording 240fps however. My SanDisk Xtreme 480gb SSD was 2/3 full and I had difficulty starting recording. The screen would flicker and nothing recorded. After I reformatted the drive, hfr recording worked. It seems that the pushes even the fasted SSD to the limit and the drive needs to be at peak performance.
