Sharpening video

I've gotten to like the TMTS warp sharp plugin for FCP (and it's free) - though if I'm sharpening something it's usually in AE.

So, AE has a good sharpening algorithm? I set my camera sceen files up for low light performance so I need to sharpen them a little bit.

If you increase the contrast of your shot, it will provide the illusion of sharpness to some degree.

AE has various options that will remind you of photoshop, lots of control and they work well.

The last footage I sharpened regularly was from my D90, after de-scaling it, etc. I've only sharpened footage that was badly underexposed, so it had to be pushed hard and then seriously de-grained. Unsharp Mask allowed me to hold details but not re-introduce noise, via the threshold control. Canon DSLR footage, DVX footage, HDV, and now HMC footage - I've never found the need to sharpen. I do often kick contrast up a hair - just like working on stills in Photoshop, it's hard for me to resist a little nudge to a shot.

Give the Matrix feature a try in AE or Sony Vegas (I think has it too...) with some minor settings, it can give video a sharpened look.

neat video is not only the best noise reduction solution (imo) but it's sharpening filter is very good. I applied it to some footage I shot inside a darkened elevator- and I was afraid it would sharpen the noise (like most other sharpeners do). Sure enough the noise did not increase, only fine details did. Of course with all sharpeners, use with restraint or it will backfire and muck it up
