GH2 Share your GH2 picture profiles and choice of hack!

Am I the only one who finds smooth compared to my settings (nostalgic 0 -2 +1 -2) is much bluer.

Nostalgic casts a sepia tint to your footage, so I've always avoided it. Best for a flat, accurate look is Standard with everything turned down. And either use presets (correctly I might add, so no Daylight preset while indoors or vice versa) or manually white balance.

Since you don't do much with your video descriptions, I made an assumption.

You said this was GH2. Still don't see a difference.

Is English your first language? Your writing is very confusing.

Yes modern saxon english before you were going from ball to ball,[sorry i had to get that in because of your finale line]regarding the films the FZ150 one was just a test to show a member on another site ,if there is need to mention the equipment i usualy do,films made at different times of the year and different locations can not be compared. In film locations where grass is not the prominent feature GH2 footage is great most of the time.

Then the solution is simple. Why don't you post some footage here that shows the poor grass shots?

I have no idea what you're talking about here. If you're saying you are a native English speaker, then your written communication skills leave a lot to be desired.

Firstly i dont put much footage on vimeo or you tube and if i do it has to be reasonable quality, secondly watching my footage on a pc screen is nothing like on my 50" pioneer tv ,the tv is better by a long way, on this http://vimeo.com/31645128 test the greens were poor, you may well say they look fine and correct them if not but i know the grass is not correct,Perhaps you may know why outdoors AWB is not as accurate as the sunny outdoor setting or why MWB with either a white card or grey card only gives a mud look to the color so i stick with outdoor, under artificial light AWB is good even greens.

Why are you even bothering with auto white balance in the first place? And if you can't get manual white balance to work for you, then you're doing something wrong or you don't actually like accurate color balance.

You said you work with AWB indoors, so you are using auto white balance.

I have tried to keep resanable with you but but clearly it is impossible,i have been using video since 1980 and film since the early 70s,i always use the best settings to get the best performance from my kit,AWB has over the years given the best color on a few of the dozens of cams i have owned,a couple simply would not set good manual wb,regarding the gh2 and awb in artificial light if it gives good acurate color why not are you a auto snob, the few machines that would not manualy set wb was NOTHING to do with me doing something wrong and in the case of my gh2 if all the colors are correct and good exept green mwb would be no cure, also you seem to be such an advocate of color correction so i guess you cant get accurate color to start with.

It's spelled "reasonable" and there needs to be a period at the end of that, not a comma. You are trying to communicate in written form and failing miserably at it. Since you are a native English speaker, you don't have much of an excuse. Please try to improve how you communicate in this way. Modern internet browsing software comes with spell check, so unless you are running Internet Explorer 6, you should be paying attention to the red dotted lines underneath words.

Thank you.

i have been using video since 1980 and film since the early 70s,

It seems to me that, by saying this, you are trying to assert some superiority over the matter. Granted, you may have been dabbling (I use the term lightly) in video for three decades longer than I have, and yet you don't seem to have a grasp on a lot of the basics, and from what I gather, you are mostly a hobbyist. That's fine and all, but not if you try to assert your experience as trumping over people when they are trying to help you.

AWB has over the years given the best color on a few of the dozens of cams i have owned

That's fine that you prefer auto white balance to get the color that you desire. However, it is by no means going to be the most accurate, and you'll forever be held to the whims of the engineer who handles how the white balance processing works in auto mode.

You may think I'm simply being a jerk to you by chastising you on your poor writing skills, but this is a good example as to why it's important to be able to properly communicate in written form. Your lack of capitalization, in conjunction with erroneous punctuation and sentence structure, makes it a chore to try to decipher what you are saying. I prefer not to have to re-read the same sentence multiple times just to be able to make sense of it.

If AWB works for you, fine. But that's not going to give you accurate results and is not going to be helpful if the results turn out to be something you do not want.

in the case of my gh2 if all the colors are correct and good exept green mwb would be no cure

Manually white balancing your camera will give you accurate color results. There may be issues outside of that, but it will definitely be more accurate than using either auto white balance or color temp presets. It seems you are simply unhappy with how "vibrant" your greens look, which could be the case of your other auto-mode cameras being adjust to bring out green while the GH2 is set to give more accurate representation of color. Given how auto-mode-happy you seem, I'm surprised you chose a camera that, in the first place, is primarily meant for shooting manually.

also you seem to be such an advocate of color correction so i guess you cant get accurate color to start with.

You have not shown anything that demonstrates inaccurate green on the GH2. Your main complaint seems to be that the problem is that the grass does look natural, and not the more vibrant green that you like from consumer camcorders.

You compared the vibrancy of the green grass on the GH2 to that of a the Canon Vixia HV30. Having used and own both cams, I find that statement ludicrous and unnecessarily baiting. The fact that you seem to prefer shooting in automatic modes as much as you can, and that you prefer an unnatural green look for your nature shooting, lends credence to my statement of you needing to use consumer camcorders over the GH2, a statement to which you rudely replied to.

A friend of mine left photography and went on to become a machinist. Why? Because 32 thousands of an inch plus or minus 3 thousands is a lot easier to control than a client saying "it's too contrasty" or "I don't like the way my face looks." Much less ambiguity with hard numbers.

Color is entirely subjective and what is pleasing is most definitely in the eye of the beholder. Back in the day people would choose Fuji film stock if they wanted richer greens and blues, Kodak if they wanted rich neutral balance, and Agfa film stock for warm yellows and reds. Each had a purpose, and the job of the photographer/cinematographer was to know the options and how to apply those choices to the job at hand. I'd say if the GH2 doesn't give the look a photographer wants, then another choice would be fine. I would also say - people shouldn't run folks down for their observations and decisions.

Each to their own. At the end of the day it's all about what we- as artists- choose to create. The arguements are without merit, as it's only our own opinions and choices that count.

Well know there's a greenish shift in gh2 footage.

If you have adobe after fx, you might want to look into colorghear. Colorghear is a group of adobe afterfx presets, specially calibrated for gh2 footage. I always use the" green kill" one, expecially on higher iso indoor scenes.
The guy who did these is a professional colorist. He does some pretty good tutorials showing how to color grade with colorghear and fx.
Many of the presets are virtually dropin and use.

The hacks, I use quantum 9b, hold up extraordinarilly well in color gradings thanks to their higher bitrates. In fact, this
is where the difference between the hack and stock can be easily be seen.
If you look at colorghear and camp comet you'll find some good examples of how flexible gh2 graded footage can be.
The gh2 is at its best shooting in as flat a profile as possible, then colorgrading.

So maybe it's not the camera and the footage, but more a question of getting as comfortable with the gh2
as previously owned cameras.

Well you certainly win the contest of being the nastiest person i have communicated with on any forum,i am very sorry and admit i do make a few mistakes with my typing now due to slight hand shake caused by tablets i have to be on for life,i am NOT looking for sympathy and care not whether you believe this or not.

Yes i am a hobbyist i think most sites are used by hobbyists if you are a pro who by your admission has been in vdeo three decades less then me why do you need to spend so much time talking to hobbyists.

You cant stop going on about AWB and i think your reading ability is worse than my spelling i never use AWB unless on the rare occasions it gives the best results.

Its only on a very few cams that i have had that i have used awb and if the GH2s awb gives best results in artificial light thats why i use it.

Each paragraph you write gets more bizarre do you think i dont know about manualy setting the WB but a good preset is often the the best solution if you are not filming in one place and light and surroundings are constantly changing,i do use manual always on aperture and shutter settings.

Once again you write a stupid pathetic paragraph the only thing i DO NOT like with my GH2 is the fact grass is a little too vivid unlike my FZ150 or HV30

You are not only a snob but a nasty vindictive snob,i will repeat i have only used awb on a fraction of my filming days.

Again you write the complete opposite to what i said, i do not think the grass looks as natural as it could be on my GH2 and my canon HV30 did or does not produce vivid green,

So finaly once and for all Manual is the way to go if possible but my GH2s MWB is poo,i like all other things about it and can live with using presets outdoors as apart from green color is good,i do know how to set MWB and some cameras i owned needed setting a long tome ago.No doubt i have made mistakes with some parts of this reply for which i can only
apologize.
