Shameless Fat Monster plug

Hey guys, I thought it would be nice to plug the Fat Monster blog real quick while I get a chance.

I know a lot of us have truly enjoyed their presence on the board and have grown fond of their sense of humor and real motivation to persevere in a business that intimidates many.

This isn't my first plug for their site, and it certainly won't be my last, but I wanted to bring it to attention again despite whether they really wanted me to or not.

The link:

They've been keeping an account of their goings-on on the Dead Week thread, too, so by all means... continue to check that out :Drogar-Evil(DBG): but in all sincerity, I recommend you hit up their blog as well and leave them comments as you do. It's truly fascinating stuff and I, for one, get quite a bit out of it.

Goodnight!

I to enjoy the FM crews enthusiasm, and they make me stand up and say hey I can do this. So bravo to you Kyle for taking the time to give props to our brothers at FM.

PS Fat Monster Rocks...

I, for one, am a huge Fat Monster fan. Mark, particularly, has been a great friend to me. He's been putting up with all of my crap and never complains. He is kind and has a sense of humor and has been a great help and inspiration to me.

Thanks Fat Monsters! Hopefully someday I will be able to join you for something. :)

There are people on this board who have more experience and have more accomplishments than we certainly do. Thus, although it is gratifying to hear appreciation and receive kind words, we can't help but be aware of how far we have to go.

I do know that the one thing that is most important to us is to be committed to improving and to take on projects that really test our abilities. In that regard, we are going to be doing a three-day shoot at the end of this month that really is going to take the measure of how far we've come. I can honestly say that I've never been this nervous about pulling off a project and it makes what we did for O2 seem small in comparison.

At the same time, I cannot imagine life being any more rich than right now as I find myself shoulder to shoulder with the partners and friends I trust most while we are working our asses off to put this project together.

Sometimes I muse about the future and how it might be some day if we are secure and no longer are "hungry." I gotta say that if that day comes I have a suspicion that I'll remember fondly how it was when we had to live in the trenches without enough time, enough money or enough equipment to really be able to be confident in what we would end up with on screen. There's definitely something exhilarating about the beautiful struggle of indie filmmaking.

D'oh! I meant MJ!!!!!

Ha ha.

That's what you meant, but unconsciously you are so full of yourself you slipped up there.

Mark, that was a lovely post. The thing is, though, I don't know one person that doesn't have far to go. Everyone is constantly evolving and becoming better, or at least that is the hope. You are a class act, sir.

Mark J's alright. Jack too. Funny it took me a long time, and it's still hard, to talk to those guys, cause when I first came here, they were the big dogs.
And still are, lol.

So, after a year of hanging around, I can almost talk to these guys now, lol.

Yeah, they still intimidate me, sort of. :)

This place just amazes me everyday. I dont know of any other forum, let alone physical "club" that has this sense of community. I for one am very thankful to be a part of it and to be in such great company of everyone (yes, even you Penguin - have to give you a hard time but you're definitely an asset and great contributor here). Mark and the Fat Monsters deserve some special recognition, not only for their great accomplishments, but mostly for how they share their experience and are always giving so much back to the community in one way or another. Sounds like exciting things are happening at the Monster Shack. Looking forward to hearing more. Keep up the fine work gentlemen.

Thank you Jeff. I totally agree with what you said. I have never been apart of a group of people so kind, talented and helpful before now. I am honored to call this place home. :)

Hey Kyle, when are you going to make your way back out here?

The second you convince me! :)

Not that I need convincing. I've just got a lot of ties to this area and it's holding me back. For one, I probably couldn't afford the move. I sure as hell don't want to work at a BANK out there because that would KIND OF destroy the whole point of coming out there in the first place. I wouldn't mind landing some sort of internship or job doing graphic design and/or photography but I haven't found anything yet. (Though I have applied at Pixar and Apple.... all with no response) -- Not only that but I'm still making car payments for a car that was too expensive for me to buy. I will probably sell it at a loss for like $2000 or so. Damn.

On top of that I've got school here and I know, inside, that I should probably finish. (Questioning it every day though... what do you guys think?) -- I've got an opportunity to move out to CA with Nate Caauwe (roto-ninja) in the next couple months but the above is causing me to hesitate... If anyone out there is good at problem solving PLEASE help me with mine. I'm so ready for change and all you guys in CA are so killer!!

As far as coming to help out and hang for awhile. Anytime, man. You say it.

What if I say it? Come out here and go through Fresno so I can yell at you from the mountain.

I am having a similar struggle (not really, but kind of). DVXuser has given me a great opportunity as a writer and maybe even as an actor. Never before had I seriously considered writing as a career choice, but now I think that's where I am going. I don't know if I want to move down there, though. I know it would definitely help the acting thing, but writing I can do from here - I AM doing it from here. The other thing is college. I have always said I would go, and everyone I know (teachers, etc) tote around the theory of "without college the furthest you can get is McDonald's" which isn't always true. If I do go, what classes do I take? I am not going to go somewhere and have someone tell me how to act, I am going to act the way I want to. And as far as writing, that's similar, and how many writing classes can I take? I don't know...

Sorry I can't help, Kyle, but I wanted to let you know "I feel you." :)

Nick And Kyle,
For what it is worth guys, do it while you are young. You don't want to wake up one day when you are married and have kids and say WTF I should have moved to LA and done something with my life. I used to work a crappy job and long hours and good pay but I was missing the one thing I had always wanted to do, MAKE MOVIES. I started this when I was six and carried on a while then moved around a lot whine whine but seriously I got hurt at work found myself with time and went for it and let me tell you if I could do it all again I would have made it a point to get involved in this business full throttle at an earlier age for sure. So from one old guy to some young up and comers I say GO FOR IT!!!! Hope this maybe helps a little.
Pauly

Yeah I have to second what Pauly is saying here. I'm married and all of my family as well as my wifes family is in the area. My roots are set. Dont get me wrong, I'm happy about that and wouldnt trade it for the world, but theres not a chance I could move to LA. Do it while you can and before other priorities keep you from doing it. If I was in your situation I'd be doing it without a doubt. You've already got a decent network of people out there so its not like you'd just be going in blind.

And IMO (which many people may disagree with) a college degree wont do much for you in this industry. The experience may be good, but going out there and doing it is where you'll really learn. Go. Before its too late :)

I'm a proponent of getting the degree for a number of reasons. However, it certainly isn't necessary to succeed in this biz as many people have proven.

Drive and perseverance are the most important things you need.
