Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

My problem is this: Everytime I create a project in Avid Xpress Pro and convert it to anything...quicktime, mpeg-2, whatever...I burn it to dvd with Sonic software and the motion turns out very shakey and jerky. But, when I output back to mini dv, then bring the footage back in with my old Pinnacle Studio software, and finally burn it to dvd, the footage turns out fine. My question is how to eliminate that process? How can I get my original smooth footage to dvd using just Avid Xpress Pro? Thanks! :)

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Does it possibly have something to do with a codec? Just throwin something out there...I have been troubleshooting this problem for a while. That's how I came up with this long, drawn-out process of recapturing to different editing software. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

There might be a field reversal issue going on here. Are you trying some field based processing in Sorenson Squeeze?

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

I don't have Sorenson Squeeze right now...can't afford it at the moment. I have a trial version of tcmp, but haven't tried field based processing...at the moment i'm not sure if i even can with tcmp...going to dvd is relatively new to me so I'm still learning. Any more advice or helpful hints? Thanks guys!

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

You might check in the Advanced tab on TMPG settings and make sure that Field Order is set to Bottom Field First for anything coming out of Avid.

Just a thought.

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

On the other hand I just reread the original post. Is the footage shakey on the QT file that you export from Avid, or is it just shakey when you finally make the DVD? If it's just the DVD check the Field Order like I suggested. If it's on the QT then we can do some more troubleshooting.

Good luck.

What are your export settings for the Quicktime file?

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Sorry it's taken me so long...I haven't had a personal project for a while on Avid. Now I do...and I am still aggravated. My work-around solution is to do a digital cut onto tape and then bring video back in through Pinnacle Studio 8 (a very basic editing program) and create an AVI and then go to DVD. If I go straight from Avid export, I get shakey-on-movement footage. It's horrible. My settings on Avid are to export to quicktime, lower-field first, etc...anything anyone could suggest would be a BIG help. Thanks!

Well, the "etc" part of your post would be a good place to start. ;D

Please post the exact settings you have selected and not selected in Avid when exporting a Quicktime.

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Hey, I'm at work right now. I'll have to give exact settings when I get home. Off the top of my head though, I choose export to quicktime, Lower field first, Video and Audio, and dv setting frame size. What are the exact settings for the Avid pros who don't get jacked up footage on export? When watching it on tv, even my wife asked why the images were jumpy on motion...even with the slightest nod of a head in the video and it did it. Surely I'm not the only one that has ever had this problem? ??? Oh well, at least I get good normal AVI export on basic Studio 8. When I get home I'll try to get the settings posted on here word for word. Thanks! :)

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Sorry again for taking so long. Here's what I'm doing when making an .mov...

Compression (customized): Video, Best Quality, 30fps, Key Frame: 0, Bottom field first

Again, I'm away from the project right now. My project is 30i. I just need to know what other people's settings are to export it to look as smooth as it does on the tape itself. I've tinkered and tested, and it's getting a bit expensive on wasted dvds. Can anyone help?

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

First of all, invest in a DVD-RW. That way you won't waste any more DVDs. ;D

Thanks for posting your settings. I'm in the middle of trying to get a project out the door, so I'll take a look at them ASAP and post back.

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

A couple of more question:

What version of Xpress Pro are you using? In your quicktime export settings, if you click "Format Options" what codec is being used? Avid DV? Animation? Something else? Have you tried exporting at a frame rate of 29.97 instead of straight 30? If you author a DVD using the jerky Quicktime footage and play it back on an actual TV instead of a computer does it still look jerky? Can you check your Pinnacle software to see if it's deinterlacing the footage?

These are just some of the throughts that sprang to mind while I was looking at your quicktime settings vs. mine.

Take heart. We'll figure out the problem eventually. :)

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Xpress Pro 4.3. In my export settings, I'm using just the "Video" codec. I tried Avid DV and got bad results. Until recently I've been using 29.97 and got the "shakey" results. Last night I changed over to 30 fps and the results were better, but there was still something off. I was wondering if it mattered what my key frame per second was. Also, would it matter if I upped it to the highest quality instead of leaving it on medium? It looks most jerky when it's played on tv. It actually looks better on the computer. That's why I'm wasting all these dvds. My dvd player/recorder only plays back dvd-r and dvd-rams. No dvd-rw's for me. :'( I haven't thought of checking the pinnacle software, but to my knowledge it's not deinterlacing the footage. Thanks for your willingness to help me out. :)

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

Here are some things to try:

Upgrade to Xpress Pro 4.6. At one point in Xpress Pro's history there was a field rendering issue with QT. I thought it was fixed by 4.3, but it's been so long ago that I get my versions confused. It was an issue that only certain people experienced, so maybe you're one of the lucky ones. Plus 4.6 is a really solid release with some nice features beyond 4.3 so it's a win-win situation and just might solve the problem.

Second, try rendering a small sequence in QT with the Animation codec, but keeping all of your other settings the same.

Third, try upping your keyframe number. 0 is a really odd keyframe setting. Try 15 or 30 and see if that helps.

Just for troubleshooting sake, does the footage look shakey if you export a QT Reference instead of a QT movie?

Sorry you can't use DVD-RWs. :-[

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

I like to keep my keyframes a multiple of the frame rate - 30fps would be 10, 5, or 6. 24fps would be 4, 6,8, 12, etc. |

0 or no keyframes is not a good idea as I don't know what it means to have "no" keyframes.

Re: Shakey DVD Footage from AVID

I meant "evenly divisible" into the frame rate, or where the frame rate is a "multiple" of the keyframe...
