Shadows affecting certain elements only?

Hi guys I'm having a bit of a problem and could use a few tips.

I'll explain the best I can:

I have a comp with text placed into a street scene (3d text sitting on a street)

I then have a plane fly over head and I need the plane's shaddow to hit the text in a realistic way.

The shadow will follow over a building and down the street and eventually wipe the text.

Is there a way to do this?

I am really not sure. I would guess that you would have to create a new layer, rotoscope the plane to get ride of the back ground. Add a drop shadow to the rotoscope plane and check off show shadow only and then keyframe the peramitors.

Make sure the " plane shadow " layer is a 3d layer that way you can turn it around if the shadow looks off.

did you use a light to get that effect on the text that it blends in so well with the footage, and also casts that shadow?

thanks,
Derrick

I can't seem to get it o work. I'm going to try and pre-comp the text layer with a light and turn cast shadows on and actually cast a shadow. Not sure how This will work but it's my next attempt.

Derrick.

I tried using a light but it didn't fit well so I used a grey to white ramp to mimic the lighting. The shadow is a duplicate layer of the text with a drop shadow effect. 3D layer TURNED on and then positioned.

I've not done this... but an idea I would try is to create a layer with a shape, that has a reasonable approximation of the shape of the air craft. Set that shape layer to 3d and 'cast shadows', and move the shape, adjusting for change and perspective, that tracks the real aircraft's path. Then angle a light such that this shape layer casts a shadow on the text, and the text of course is set up to receive shadows.

I don't have a clear way to elminate the 'shape' from the view of the camera, other than, if the airplane only makes a shadow after it has passed the virtual observation point, then the shape would be out of the camera view as well...

Make sure that you text is set to recieve shadows, and from as high as that plane is, make sure the the plane actually goes between the light and the text.

Or just fake it with another plane shape blurred, an a new 3d layer, and pass that over the txt. It's not the real shadow, but it will work.

Thanks guys.

Doing this with a 3D light and actually casting the shadow seems to be the best way to go.

Sadly I ran out of time before delivery and could not add it.

When I have time I will complete it for myself.

Thanks for the help.

You guys rock!
