music video questions

We're shooting a music video for a local band in november and december, and I wanted to ask some suggestions. We will have both a DVX and a XL2 to shoot with. As far as frame rate, I was thinking that 30p would give a good look for their video, which will include shots of the band playing, as well as some cinematic type shots with a story.

Are there any particular settings on the DVX that might help it match the XL2 as far as cutting footage? If they want to shoot in 16:9, I will have to upres the DVX footage to match. Will that introduce too much noise?

I'm going to make a separate post regarding lighting equipment and audio equipment because that is more project independent, however, do most of you music video guys record the band playing live or them lip syncing to their standard CD?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks :)

Please keep in mind I have never used the HVX, but I did own an XL1s-
If I were shooting this, I would use the lone cam as a wide safe shot, using the pair of XLs for the up close/ special shots. Be sure to use the same frame rates and color/white balance them at the same time.

I'll try address this in order:

Pick either the DVX or the xl2 and just use one camera.

Unless you have a specific reason not to, when shooting narrative stuff or music videos stick with 24p. 90% of music videos are sot on film, and film plays at 24 frames per second, not 30. So if you if that's the look you want, shoot 24.

The Xl2 has settings too :) so offering DVX settings to match isnt very helpful since no one knows what the settings set to in your XL2.

Since this is a music video, just don't shoot 16x9 and matte in post if that's the look you want. Even in the video was played on MTV you wouldn't need the extra res. And yes, cropping and upresing the DVX footage would make it match the XL2 footage even less.

if it's a "music video", you lip synch to the CD and film from many different angles playing the song over and over and over again. When filmming a live performance, the band plays the song once and you shoot from different angle using 5 or 6 or 10 cameras.

Thanks :) That was very helpful! I will just have to make sure that the lighting is good, so 24p won't suffer.

The camera that we will use will come down to if we'll have an XL2 before november to begin shooting. If not, we'll have to use the DVX for the entire video.

If we chose to use the DVX for the shoot, can you offer any suggestions for settings?

you just have to play with the settings and decide what you like. For the most part I like to shoot as flat as possible and achieve the look in post, even though I know exactly what look i want. You have more control when playing with the image in post.

That basically mean, don't turn your masterped below -2 and use the cinegamma D rather than V. I also used to do a lot of custom white balances (to odd colors), but again, I find i have more control if I white balance normally for each set up and change the colors in post.

just the way I've learned to do it.

awesome. thanks a ton for the help! :) i'm excited to get started. this will be the first real music vid i've produced / directed...

without getting into to much detail, any special suggestions for lighting? like i said i'll post it up in the other section since i'm looking for a kit thats not project specific, but i figured you might have some good ideas.

their live band playing shot will be done in a warehouse thats like 9ft ceilings, and fairly wide open with a few cement pillars. I was thinking work halogens for that, and maybe softening them with a big sheet.

Quick question regarding this....

If they want to do a slight slowmotion for the cinematic part of the video, would I shoot 24p and edit on a 30p timeline for that section? Or should I shoot the entire video in 24pA and edit on a 24pA timeline and rely on post-production slo-mo.

Thanks :)

if you want to do any slowmo, shoot it at 30p(slight slomo) or 60i(dramatic slomo), then edit in a 24 timeline. if you try to slow down standard 24p footage it will look terrible.

ok cool, thanks :) i had it backwards hehe. The only thing i'm worried about is shooting the band playing live at a bar, and them playing (set up with multiple takes). For the cinematic, I'll shoot at 30p and put it on the 24p timeline, and for the set up band, I'll shoot 24p, and for the live shoot, I guess I'll have to shoot 24p for that. I'm just worried about shadowing and the lack of lighting in there. :(

ok got it set finally :) 24p for the set up shoot, 30p for cinematics, and 30p at the live performance! I'm currently working on storyboarding their cinematic idea woohoo
