Settings to use when using 35 mm lenses

Hello,

Wish the advanced manual was clearer on this subject, but I just want to be clear that I understand how to use my 35 mm Nikon lenses with the GH4.

From all I gather you have to go to the custom setting "shoot w/o lens" and turn that on. Then set camera to "aperture priority" setting. This done I should be able to adjust aperture manually on my lens and speed on the camera. I'll be able to get correct exposure by watching a little +/- sign on the screen.

Have i figured it out? (Still haven't got the camera in my hands but am trying to sort this all out before I do.)

Thanks

John

Yea you're kind of there. You mount the Nikon lens (with an adapter) to the GH4. You indeed enable 'shoot without lens'. I actually don't know why it isn't on by default, but that's another story.

It doesn't matter in which photo mode or video mode you go, just check your exposure meter. There are different metering options, so check those in the menu as well. And indeed, when the exposure indicator is in the middle of the +/- sign, the exposure of the particular area (which is dependent on which metering mode is selected) is perfect.

I'm using manual Nikon lenses all the time on my GH3. Always have the mode on Manual / Movie mode and arrange everything myself. ISO, aperture, shutter speed, ND filter. That's it. I'm sure you will get used to it quickly!

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply and the information.

Just wondering. Wouldn't I be restricted to the manual or aperture priority modes? Perhaps only the aperture priority.

I'm assuming in aperture priority the camera would be accepting whatever aperture I set manually on my lens and would be adjusting frame rate to produce correct exposure.

You will have to set the aperture manually with the aperture ring. The camera will be totally "unaware" of aperture setting but will be "measuring" the light coming in. I've got a few Nikon F mount (AI/AI-S) lenses and only use "M"anual exposure mode. Once the aperture ring is "set" to what I want to use I adjust shutter and ISO to zero the meter indicator. With CONSTANT PREVUE set to ON, the EVF and LCD actually show any exposure changes made so at that time I can adjust shutter or ISO for a slightly darker look or possibly brighter look getting a pretty fair prevue of what I'm going to get.

CONSTANT PREVUE works only in Manual modes (both still and video).

Exposure might work in Aperture Priority mode with "legacy" lenses but I haven't tried that. I stick with Manual.
