Serious Magic/HVX

Ernesto: As THoff says, you'll need a DVCPro codec in order for your NLE to recognize the clips. We may make one available to our beta testers.

Jim: DV Rack records DVCPro content in your choice of AVI Type 1, AVI Type 2, Canopus, QuickTime, and a new QuickTime for Avid.

Could you please explain what you mean by "a new Quicktime for Avid"?

Avid of course can't natively work with Quicktimes, but can work natively with the MXFs that the HVX records to P2.
Can you confirm whether footage recorded on the DVC rack will work nativly with Avid, or if it will have to be imported/transcoded, and if so will there then be a loss of quality?

cheers

A codec for beta testers would be good.

I'm only able to use the 1080 in QTavid format at the moment, no codec support for anything else. (I'm Premiere Pro based). I'm going to try DVC rack today for the second pat of the sports event I'm covering. (Thing is I shot yesterday at 720/50).

That cable is much too long for 100Mbps Firewire use. For 25Mbps DV it will work, but you cannot have a cable that long for DVCPro50/HD or connecting a Firewire hard drive.

Thanks THoff, no I really do not need that long but a least half or a third of the distance (30- 40 feet) will it be posible for 100 Mbps ? or wich is the longest cable I can use?

Thanks also to you the_other_Mark, can I have that codec? what do I have to do?

:dankk2:

PS: I'm a PC Premiere Pro 2 User

The IEEE 1394a protocol and associated wiring can support several transfer speeds, 100Mbps, 200Mbps, and 400Mbps, known as S100, S200, and S400, respectively.

At the highest speed, the cable length must not exceed about 4.5 meters / 15 feet in order to comply with the electrical and timing specifications. At slower speeds, the distance can be extended somewhat, but this is not officially supported and there are no clear guidelines as to how long the cable can be.

A workaround is to use multiple compliant cable segments with Firewire repeaters in between the segments.

The longest Firewire cable I have is a 15-foot 4-pin to 4-pin right-angle connector cable from Markertek -- this works reliably with the HVX200 for DVCProHD captures.

Mark,

For those look you us DVC Rack with CineForm's Aspect HD or Prospect HD, we need to determine which capture format to recommend. A beta tester of yours gave me an Canopus AVI, which we can use (with a small change to the header -- see thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=624497#post624497.) I understand the difference between AVI Type 1 & 2, but what makes a Canopus AVI different -- I want to make sure we can handle any of the AVI format (and maybe QT soon.)

P.S. Our products already remove duplicate frames form HXV200 MXF files, so the same technique will work for clips captured with DV Rack.

Chimpan-A: I'm not sure what distinguishes the QTAvid format except that it involves some tweak to the header/footer. In my rather limited testing I have not yet had a chance to drop clips into the various NLEs. When I return to work after taking this week off, I'll have DV Rack's lead developer explain it to me, and I'll pass on what I learn.

David Newman: I'll ask the lead developer to work with you on this. Please send me your email address to me at mmapes@seriousmagic.com so I can put the two of you in direct contact.

RFK: simply drop me a note at mmapes@seriousmagic.com; I'll send you the download info.

This lack of output on firewire is killing me, because my entire workflow for an upcoming feature is based on 720PN. Next time I'll just plan for 720P or 1080. I now see another one of the reasons they are making the Cineporter.

since the camera can send out 24p over a 60 frame stream with pulldown - couldnt dvrack perform the pulldown on the fly and only save the necessry frames to allow the writing of a 24pN stream?

It already does!

so to be clear then 24P for dvrack is equivalent to 24PN on disc?

if this is true - i am buying right now

So Barry.

Currently DV Rack will record over firewire an "effective" 24PN stream?

By "effective," I mean that only 24 discrete frames are actually being recorded.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

But for clarification we're talking about DVC Rack, not DV Rack. DVC Rack is for the HVX (and it's not available for sale yet), DV Rack is the existing product that works only with DV.

Now, you can buy it now if you want, you can buy DV Rack and the existing HDV PowerPak, and you'll get a free upgrade to DVC Rack when it's released, but you can't buy DVC Rack today as it's still in beta.

Hi the_other_Mark, what about that codec? could we get it before our beta time expires?

thankyou

:)

Hey Barry, I think you have seen and edit your DVCRack clips, didn't you? if yes, how?

PS: I've been able to capture but no more, no editing no viewing. I got the Matrox DVCPro codec (Digisuite)but di not work.

:(

How difficult is it to use waveform and vectorscopes? These are two features needed to use dvrack as a monitor right? Do you need to be an engineer?
