Serious Magic Decoder

If I had a Core 2 Duo laptop (2.33ghz) w/2gb RAM, 7900 GTX 512mb RAM. 60gb 7200rpm (system drive), eSATA or Firewire external RAID array (w/2 7200rpm HDD)...do you think this would be able to realtime edit 1080 (24p, 24pa, 60i) footage?

SO Barry - if you use the DVCPro HD Decoder to convert the files to avi... are you bringing them straight into a PremPro project and editing with an Adobe HD preset or are you using an HD Aspect preset?

None of the above. I bring the files into Vegas; I'm not using Premiere Pro or Aspect HD.

But the point is, they're readily-editable .AVI files that will work in any AVI-compatible application. Premiere, After Effects, Windows Media Player, anything.

Not quite anything.

I've tried loading the AVIs into Ulead's Mediastudio Pro 8, and it shows an all-green image. Dunno why, it doesn't bother me greatly since I use Edius to edit HVX footage natively, but I tried it for grins and giggles once, and was surprised that it didn't work.

Next week's patch may fix that, but as of today, MSP is not an option.

That's interesting...and good to know.

You'd figure if SM's DVCPro HD decoder converts the MXF file into an .AVI, that should make it play on most NLE's and players that can play an .AVI file.

I wonder if SM's decoder does something else to the MXF file in the conversion process that prevents it from playing in MSP.

THoff - Are you using the latest Edius Broadcast 4? How do you like it?

Yes, I'm on V4.03, the current patch level. It is lacking some things that you might take for granted if you came from other tools, has a quirky interface, and the documentation is almost entirely in electronic form and riddled with grammatical errors, but the program is very robust, exceptionally fast, has excellent multicam support, and unsurpassed P2 workflow.

I did all my SD work in Mediastudio, but hadn't fired that up in months. Given that I use Edius and it can open both MXF files and the DV Rack AVI files without any other tools, it took some boredom on my part to actually play with the Serious Magic Decoder, and that's when I tried opening the resulting file in Mediastudio.

Yes, from yours and other's posts regarding the smooth and complete P2 support it seems like the top choice for users that acquire footage in the P2 MXF format.

How are the realtime effects? Are they really realtime or studdering realtime?

The primary concerns I have for "realtime" effects are:

- Color Correction
- Transitions; basically just fade (in-outs) (to white, to black) nothing too fancy
- Titles - Hope the titler they include is decent

Oh, and is Procoder included with EB4? If not, what (if any) encoder does EB4 provide?

Color correction and simple transitions are easily done in realtime by Edius.

Titles are done using a program called "Title Motion Pro" by Inscriber Technologies which is included with Edius. It is quite powerful, but there is of course a learning curve.

Edius comes with Procoder Express, which is a lite version of Procoder. It doesn't have the "Mastering Quality" option for outputting MPEG2s and can't be run standalone, but I have found it to be more than adequate for outputting MPEG2s, WMVs, and H.264 QT files.

My biggest beef is that the workflow can be inefficient. When you go to render your project in Edius, you can't do anything else until Procoder Express has converted it to the desired output format, and you can't start another instance of the program. There is also no support for batch jobs, something I miss from Mediastudio Pro -- it allowed me to drop a number of video files or even complete projects with transitions, effects etc. into a queue for rendering using settings that are individually adjustable for each item in the queue.
