Serenity Now!

Resident Agitator
Who's amped for Serenity? I've been watching Firefly episodes and readin the Serenity comics in preparations for this evening.

I'm stoked, it's a quirky, extremely well written show... and the movie shows the reivers, which, from what I understand are scary as hell, and very zombie like.

For those that don't watch the show, here is one of the characters' desriptions of the reivers: "They'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into they're clothing. And if we're very lucky, they'll do it in that order."

Awesome.

Saw it. Loved it. And what I didnt, I wont talk about yet. But I wont be the only one it bugs, I dont think. Am going again tomorrow with the daughter and her BF. I missed one scene and need to go back and get it. :)

You can tell who in the audience is a Firefly fan because they are not confused by the intermittent chinese, the use of the word 'shiny', and the peculiar speech in general. And the audience I saw it with had a great time.

But you know what? Everyone I know says they dont understand why I like the movies I do....so take my words with a grain of salt (unless you are on a salt restricted diet, in which case, I dont know what to tell you).

*edit- Oh, and I cant WAIT for the dvd for the BTS!

This movie... sucked. Keep in mind I'm someone who saw Firefly once, really wanted to like it, and thought it was terrible. Why did I see this movie then? Cause people told me it was good . Let's go over the checklist shall we?

clever witty dialogue that isn't clever or witty - check
Incredibly miscast and annoying Christina Ricci/Skeletor/hippy character - check
Miscast Han Solo-type lead whose every line is delivered with his mouth closed - check
Confusing plot - check
Not one original idea - check
Writer who tries so hard to buck conventions that you can guess every line and every 'twist' just by asking 'okay, what's the exact opposite of what would usually happen right now?' - check
boring mythology - check
hover chase scene where the vehicles can't be going more than 10 miles per hour - check

there are a thousand other reasons to hate this movie. it... was... terrible. if you are not a die-hard fan, PLEASE, do not go see this. There's a reason this show got cancelled.

My God, c.g.eads...I'm going to have to go look for a "Top Five anything" thread to see what kind of stuff you do like. But, thanks for going out and supporting a movie that was written by someone whose known style is distasteful to you, whose series that this was completely based on provided you with no apparent entertainment, and whose characters you already felt were terribly cast and even poorly developed.

*edit- well, after looking thru about 4 pages of your posts, I found more remarks about movies you didnt like than any that you did. But you did, however, have wonderful advice on how to determine if a movie was good:

Well, let's be honest. There are many more bad movies out these days than good ones, which can account for my mostly negative reviews. I just saw A History Of Violence, which I thought was good. But outside of that and Crash, I don't think I can remember a movie this year that I liked. There may be a few, but the fact that I can't remember them doesn't bode well.

Looking back at my review of this movie, I admit I may have gone a little overboard. It's just that I've heard so much about how "brilliant" this Whedon guy is, and I don't see it. I don't see anything brilliant at all. And people are saying this is better than the Star Wars prequels? I mean c'mon, Lucas is no genius when it comes to dialogue and directing actors, but where he's got Whedon and everyone else beat hands down by a million, is ATMOSPHERE. No matter how many stupid CGI backdrops he uses, his movies *feel* like a living breathing universe. This Serenity movie feels like an excuse to make a bunch of wisecracking jokes.

Anyway, like I said, I'm not attempting to divert the Firefly loyalists, just warn the others.

I'm such a hardcore Whedon fan because I've spoken with the man a couple times and Buffy was my favorite show in 8th grade. I mean, I own Buffy season 1 on DVD and I own next to no TV on DVD (I stole my brother's copy of Arrested Development, other than that that's about it.) Also, I saw Serenity twice before it opened in great theaters so of course I should love it.

But I think it has issues. The first two acts are a meandering quest narrative, the set up is too clever and still a little confusing, and some characters I don't buy. The thing that bothers people didn't bother me and when Joss explained why he put it in, I now understand why he did. I think it's the reason the third act (which follows thing thing that bothers fans of the show) works so well, and I really did like the last 3rd a lot.

Oh well, I agree the movie has its flaws but I still enjoyed it.

C.g, if you didn't like a single movie this year, you have to lower your standards or something. This year had a bunch of fun movies. I don't think I saw one movie this year I didn't at least enjoy. (Except "Lady Windemere's Fan" but that was released in the 1920s and oh god was it boring as hell....)

Okay, I thought it was GREAT. I love the writing, I love the characters, and I'm glad that they didn't have the theme song over the credits- because I HATE that thing.

Die Hard fans- difinitely DO see this.

I'll do a more cohesive review in the morning.

Glad you liked it, TC. I'm currently catching up and watching Firefly in preparation for Serenity (release is Oct 14th here). It's never been show on TV in Russia, so I ordered the DVDs from Amazon, but you know how they work, might take few months to deliver. So I'm downloading 'em episodes one by one and watching while waiting :lipsrseal

Oh, almost forgot... I'm LOVING it :cheesy:

You wanna run this ship?!

Yeah!

(Beat)

Well you can't.

LMAO, I love that part in the trailer. This movie seems weird, but again I've never seen a firefly episode in my life, and to be honest, never even heard of it before until the other day reading about it on IMDB.

I just saw it and I missed the first 15mins. I don't think I've seen the firefly stuff but I was alittle lost in this movie. I guess I need to check out firefly and the serinety comics. Anyway, I thought this movie was okay. Actually I think everymovie is okay! I personally thought the diaolge was at times cheesy! Christina Ricci? I thought she looked familar! Shes damn skinny! For some reason this movie reminded me of that 80's movie V. I dont know why.

Overall, I thought the movie was good! Nothing spectacular just a plain coo looking movie. I didn't like the fight scenes at all. Too Hollywood! I guess Tony Jaa raised the bar. Anyway, I see movies for free to I can't really complain.

Yes, if you can, check out the series. I wondered while watching it if people with no Firefly history would be able to come in and "get" the movie. I still dont know. There is so much that happened in the series to get these people to the place they are in the movie. But personally, I am glad they didnt choose to do a quick rehash of the entire series, or flashbacks a la Lost.

I think what will happen is that some people will see this movie and be interested enough to go check out the series. Then go see the movie again. heh!

Caught it last night. I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the visual direction and effects could've been better, but the actors were great and it was a lot of fun. This was so much better than the crapfest Lucas has put out lately. I'll probably catch it again. I don't know if the film makes sense for a non Firefly fan either. I've watched the series a couple times and knew what to expect.

Went last night -- it did not disappoint! It felt like "Firefly" was back. I was afraid it would just be a two hour summary of the TV episodes, bit instead it's a great wrap-up to the already established storyline. Now, even if there is never another Firefly/Serenity installment, at least there is closure... but honestly, after seeing this movie I'll be surprised (and greatly disappointed) if there's not another Serenity film. Definitely the most fun I've had at the movies in 2005.

I'd like to comment on a few key plot elements, but I suppose it can wait until a later date so as not to spoil things for anyone.

Bad freakin ass. I didn't expect it to be half this good, and if it were, it would have still been bad ass. This was a movie that was so jam packed and rockin that it had no time for such petty crap as opening credits music. That was the tightest jam the crew have ever been in, my God that was intense. And why TF did Whedon do what he did? That was just unnecessary, and it is my only complaint, which actually made the movie even better...but man....man o man. I couldnt care less if someone who hasnt seen the show gets it or not, with Whedon not knowing if there would ever be any more or not, he had to pack it with as much fan satisfaction per second as possible...it was the right thing to do.

Whedon is infamous for doing that.

*SPOILER*
From what I understand, he had a character in Angel that everyone loved, and he killed him off.

Well now that it's sort of open for discussion, I think that disposing of "I am a leaf on the wind" (as sad as it is to see him go) was a powerful move. Immediately following that event Whedon puts everyone in immediate danger and starts injuring them one by one, leaving us to think "He's nuts I tell you! Who will he kill off next? Mal?!" It really puts the danger back into the situation, rather than forcing us to make ourselves forget that "bridge crew" never die.

(on the flipside is the death in Trek X... totally pointless)

Knowing Whedon's writing, I was half expecting "I am a leaf on the wind" to turn to Zoe and say "There's a huge stake through my torso!"

Owen, Whedon commented on that scene following a preview screening I attended. Your reasoning is 100% right--that's basically verbatim what he said.

A preview screening with Whedon? "Lucky!"

I was wondering if that scene was in the preview screening. I can't believe I avoided spoilers for THAT considering how long ago they started with the previews.

Admittedly, I was sort of shocked/slightly angry after the movie. It wasn't until day 2 that I came to terms with how effective that decision was.
