For writing an article/post ??

Isnt it a bit harsh ?!

We have all read posts about how to strap a iPod or P2 form firewire drive and other creative uses/modifications ?

Infact it was just an article about creative use of what u own.

Its troubling to see the one sidedness of hailing Panasonic all the time - is it a taboo to point out its shortcomings (sometimes) ?

His pbase article states:
"Panasonic is a major advertiser on the two web sites that i was banned from.
My posts on a third web site; 2-pop.com get delted as soon as they are posted. All of this is happening by one person that happens to be a moderator on all three sites. This individual also has a close relationship wth panasonic."
http://www.pbase.com/aghvx200/do_hvx200s_dream_of_lenses

I sure hope this is not the case!
*Sigh* lest I get banned - here goes "HVX200 rocks!!"

I did read his article last week knocking the shortcoming for the JVC cam - but he was not banned for that, but when he talks abt Panasonic - he gets booted off 3 forums... hmmm...

Banned for what? free speech, thoughts, ideas, debate, influence...is this for real? I hope not.

OUCH! I sincerely hope this isn't true, or that we're only getting "half the story," as they say. The modifications of cameras to achieve desired results has been around for a while. No one complains about the Reel-Stream Andromeda modification, or the Mini35 adapters... Why should writing about modifying the HVX's lens be a "bannable" offense?

This is a very troubling thread. I love my DVX, and really hope I can get my hands on the HVX as soon as it comes out. But this kind of alleged bias toward keeping the HVX as it was originally made is very unsettling. If you buy an HVX and feel like using a hacksaw to take out the MiniDV drive because you want to, go ahead! Whatever floats your boat. Don't expect the warranty to remain intact, though. But if you want to do this, by all means! It's your camera, and your money.

I don't want to get banned, either, but this seems very, very wrong. I hope what we have here is misinformation of some sort and not the whole story of what happened with Mr. Pappas.

A post-market hack of an HVX is not an issue. No one cares what someone does with his own camera, I can assure you.

Hopefully somebody will come in here and clear up why he was banned from multiple forums then

Free speech? We have that right,,,but this is someone's website. They own it and we are here only if they want us. If Pappas want to talk about something he has that right to start a website too. Not saying it was right or wrong to ban him,,,but the owners of dvxuser.com have that right.

and who wants to do what he was talking about anyway!!

Ok, this makes me feel better. We don't need to know why anyone gets banned from DVXUser; it's just that the article makes it seem like that's precisely what happened. As I assumed, only "half the story."

Thanks for posting this, Jubal28.

Banned for life from multiple forums. Seems like that would require a major offense. Must have called someone of importance a 'doody head' or something.

Zim, I agree with your turf statement but there's a much larger issue at hand. Progresss is the result of the free flow of information. That is why societies that embrace the chaos of free discourse prevail over tightly controlled environments, i.e., North Korea vs. Canada, etc...

So what does this have to do with DVXuser? everything...a community thrives best when freedom prevails. To not call out censorship actions in a community of filmmakers is dangerous because it allows a pattern of behaviour to fester and infect the community culture. Is there really anyone out there that really believes they know it all, to the point where they become a censor? do we need that type of protection? I don't think so. Freedom always has crazy people in the mix and once in a while that crazy person with their stupid idea becomes the next genius and turns the world around. Watch out for who you toss out, they may be the best thing you have going.

I do not know the inside story of this"banned thing"...or anything about it other than I saw a posting about improving the HVX camera design. What's wrong with that? If DVXuser is little more than a Panasonic Ad then they should step up and say so. I believe DVXUSER has proven to be much more than just an Ad and will try to stay objective.

He must have called somone a pooh pooh. Now that is unforgivable!

He may have been banned for posting the same message on multiple forums. Who knows? Anyone?

Not talking for him, but he published an article in his website - and linked that article... if you think about it - when you write a review or article, u would post in multiple forums to let people know about it. It didnt have any refferal links or advertisement banners - just a viewpoint.

In my blog, I wrote a mini-review of Photoshop CS2 - I posted in forums where someone asked for a review of CS2 and posted in a Photoshop review forum. That is not a crosspost.

Free speech? We have that right,,,but this is someone's website. They own it and we are here only if they want us.

The very nature of an internet forum is to discuss, debate as a collective group both positives and negatives, but if valid viewpoints (measured by the response for his article) are nipped - I am not sure if they can keep their users for long except diehard fans

I am all for banning spammers, persistent trolls and abusive posters, free ipod, flamethrowers or WANT TO MAKE QUICK $$$ from HOME ? posters - but its not cool to get banned for a opposite point of view

DVXuser has grown and attracted many many others who dont even own a DVX100 (like me) - I just come here to learn about various cams, techniques & technologies, and also to read Barry Green's posts :). DVXuser.com it has evolved itself to be a much bigger discussion area than what its URL defines. So maybe we should tune ourself to have a wider viewpoint and allow dissent.

As monte says, I hope the mod who banned him clear up the reason for his ban... not that he has to, but it will certainly clear up the accusations of Panasonic's influence+pressure into shaping user opinions in open forums (as in its not a panasonic company intranet forum).

I had no involvement in any banning, but I can say this -- nobody, anywhere, was banned for writing an article about anything, at least not from this site. I have no idea what may or may not have happened on the Cow, but Ron Lindenbloom on the Cow seems to have no hesitation in corralling in posters that he finds unruly.

Cross-posting is something that's frowned on by most forums; DVInfo even has a huge bold permanent sticky on the top of it that says "please don't cross-post". So broadcasting the same post, word for word, across multiple forums may have been part of the reason he was banned.

It's my understanding that anyone who wants to express their opinion is certainly welcome, but there are some things that are universally frowned on by most bulletin boards, and "trolling" is one. Politics is another -- bring up political subjects here on this board, and you'll quickly find them deleted and a private message will be sent to the poster explaining the policy, and repeatedly ignoring the mods is a good way to get banned. Pornography is another taboo subject here. And posting lewd or offensive or political avatar pictures will get you a private message expecting you to change it, and if that message is ignored, it could result in banning. Name-calling, getting personal, insulting, all those things will get your posts deleted, and repeatedly engaging in that behavior will get you banned.

I'll ask around, but it's my understanding that repeated private messages were sent by various of the moderators to Mr. Pappas. I was not one of them, I conducted my exchanges with him in the public forum, which was probably not the right way to go, private messages were probably the better way, and I'll keep that in mind the next time something like this comes up.

Regarding opinions -- we're all for opinions here, that's the whole point of the board. Anyone can say anything they want, as long as it's not intentional bashing or trolling or spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). We have an XL2 forum, an FX1 forum, a JVC HD100 forum... lots of healthy debate is good. Let's just keep it healthy debate, not one-sided bashing. One thing this site won't stand for is to have it be used as a tool for a negative PR campaign designed to discredit an individual or a product. Factual evidence is one thing, but spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt will get you corralled in on most boards.

Regarding sponsorship: Panasonic doesn't pay this site one dime. Never has. Panasonic wouldn't, couldn't, and didn't have any influence in any banning. If you've read some of the things Jarred used to say about Panasonic Canada, you'd know that! ;)

I don't intend to speak for others that are more directly involved in this matter, but I will clearly state that this thread is filled with mostly incorrect information. The board allows a diversity of opinions and viewpoints--however that doesn't allow users carte blanche. The other day I locked down a thread from a overzealous P2 supporter. Panasonic has no control of this board, nor has any Panasonic employee ever requested the deletion of threads or the banning of a user. When Jan sees what she feels is misinformation---her response is post her own reply--as any user is free to do.

Issues with individual users almost always involve form, not content. We ask users to self-moderate and for the most part this works just fine. If you're new to the board, it might be helpful to sit back and read posts for a week or two in multiple forums to see how this community operates. The forums are meant to be informational, respectful, and professional. They're also a community resource not mean to be dominated by a small number of individuals. Before starting new threads, it's worthwhile to consider if your post might fit into an existing thread. This makes the information easier to find and preserves some continuity of discussion. Posting of a lot of threads from one person pushes other threads off the front forum page, so we ask that users try to be courteous of others.

Please refrain from wild speculation on this ban because at this point it's only spreading incorrect information. I'd also remind users that in the *extremely* unlikely event that you receive a brief temporary ban, creating a new user name to get around the ban is not going to make you popular with the mods.

I'm all for the free flow of ideas and this board seems pretty easy going. There must be more to the story.

Please also keep in mind that there's a certain amount of discretion involved in matters like this. If, say, someone in your office is fired, you don't always find out why -- if you even know they're fired at all. There's a fine line here between keeping the membership informed and keeping private matters private. This is as much for the benefit of the member who's banned as it is for anything else.

I, too, was not directly involved, but it's never something that's done lightly and without ample requests to cease the action that led to it.

There must be more to the story.
yeah.. simultaneous co-ordinated banning from 3 different sites seems a bit odd, one has to infer that it was because of the article + Panasonic pressure. He was a free flowing fish before that :)

At least Barry Green and Barry_S have reiterated what I believed - glad to know that guys. But I am still puzzled at this particular ban as it seems co-ordinated - how many Mods are there anyway?
there was a clue someone posted and it dissappeared :) ARK... ARK Films or AkaramFilms ?
