sequence setting, custom frame size, export issues

hey guys,

I've scoured old threads on this site and creative cow, but couldn't find anything.

Ok so here the scenario. My boss and I have been trying to figure out what is the best way to export a custom-sized video, in FCP using quicktime because the final output will be on the web, with a custom size of 888x350, (although that aspect ratio is still up in the air, since the web designers are still creating the mockups for it and where the video header will be. So the dimensions aren't completely set yet, but let's go with that anyways.)

The footage was shot on an HVX200 in 720p24pn, captured, and then edited on the normal sequence setting using the DVCPROHD 720p60 Quicktime settings, with the frame size of HD(960x720) 16x9, pixel aspect ratio is the same (HD (960x720)

the edits are done, now we are in the testing phase of exports, which we have done, but unsuccessfully. Our shots still look pretty horrendously stretched, or distorted.

This has been our workflow. Take the edits with the default 720p 24p settings, and make a copy and throw it into a new sequence with the appropriate custom dimensions of (888x350), resized the shots so they fill the frame size and get it to where we want it then we exported a number of different ways with different settings and what not, using QT conversion. So basically the issue is the image still comes out looking distorted.

Is there an easier way to solve this with good results? how say you? Thanks guys!

when you say its for the "web" what do you mean?

will you be comping anything in flash?
is it a standard quicktime embed?

right, but is there any way to get it in that frame size, without it being distorted?

If the dimensions that you indicated are 'absolute', then no there is no way to fit the 16:9 material in to a non-16:9 rectangle without distortion.

If you can 'accept' black bars on the sides or top and bottom, then shrink your material down so that it fits in the frame without distortion, and you will have black bars on top and bottom, or the sides, depending on which dimension 'doesn't fit'. But at least you will not have distortion...

Alternatively you can shrink it down, leaving a large gap on the bottom to put in Captions... which almost all current 'direct to internet' producers seem to not even acknowledge a need for...
