Sensor cover

I should have though of this before, but would it be possible to have a sliding cover built into the camera that closes the open area when the lens is removed so the sensor does not get dust in the area. That would be a lot nicer then popping on a plastic cover. I'm paranoid about exposing the sensor to dust.

Maybe it could even be shut while the lens is on, so I can shut it before the lens is removed and open it after the new lens is on.

Well, you'd never get dust on the sensor as the sensor is behind a glass filter anyway. And if you do get dust on that, it's really easy to clean with a sensor brush as any DSLR owner will tell you.

Yes, there are a number of sensor cleaning devices made for DSLRs. The brush type works well for me: quick, easy and effective. I use the one from www.visibledust.com. Actually, DSLRs are recently starting to use a (piezo-driven?) vibrating sensor/AA filter, that actually shakes dust off after startup or after a lens change.

Anyway, occasional sensor cleaning should be nothing at all if you're coming from a background shooting 35mm film and all the gate-cleaning and maintenance that requires.

Never the less, would it not be nice to have a cover in place so you don't get dust on the sensor filter, and for transportation purposes. It would not be good if the filter was scratched or gets dirty. Can the filter be easily removed and replaced?

There's really no way to scratch the filter as it's inside the camera. It's not usually a user removable part. Also, whether you can fit a cover glass in depends on the way that PL mount works and the distances we have to play with, which I'm told, are tight.

I understand that a little dust will still work its way in but there are many good reasons for it.

1) Avoiding most dust = less cleaning.

2) Avoid water or debris from falling in when outside.

3) Transportation, so something does not jab inside the opening.

A quick flip and it could be protected.

Ok, thanks, just throwing around ideas. I really dug the built in lens shutter on my Z1, and that gave me ideas.. ;)

I can imagine P/L mount caps exist to "attach" to the lens mount when there is no lens attached.

Yeah, I assumed that too. Otherwise it would risk getting dust when it is shipped to you!
