AC160 Senseless names of files in DV - mode

Barry! Why the names of files in DV mode make according the casual law. Therefore it's impossible to sort files by name in a chronological order.

Yup, I am not sure why they have not fixed this naming issue. I can't place the files into the timeline unless I check each one.
This is why I bought the VC102 and use it's files.

Is this the same thing as P2 files? Every clip has a random name, so theory goes you never repeat a clip name.

Though I really prefer the naming schemes that I can sort by file name in the order things were shot (at least by camera / by shoot) & not repeat file names.

Jesus...

Barry isn't Jesus of course I know it. But he is closer to him, than all of us.

1.First: Barry told that this forum read japanese developers.
2. Second: Barry can systematise information and pass to developers directly with the comments.

I hope, that Barry will help us to correct all bugs in this camera.

Barry, I think, has asked for or suggested changes to the naming. I think it was mentioned in the 40/80 forum.

It's not a bug and it's not random. I mean, there is a bug, but that's separate.

First, understand that the file names are not random and it is in fact very easy to put them in chronological order. Look at the first three digits of the file name. It will always be an ascending number, starting at "000". Next clip you shoot will be "001". Next one will be "002". The confusion comes from there being two random digits appended to the filename, so when you see "012R500.AVI" you think it looks random but it isn't. Taking my prior example, you'd have file names like:
000L300.AVI
001RL00.AVI
002IU00.AVI

The first three digits are ascending numerically and always will be. So if you focus on the first three digits you'll have no problem sorting your clips.
000L300.AVI
001RL00.AVI
002IU00.AVI

So, again, don't panic, they're all sorted numerically ascendingly. And this is also why there's a 1,000 clip limit on the card -- the maximum filename you could get is "999", or something like "999ZS00.AVI".

Okay, so earlier I said there's a bug -- there is (in my opinion) a bug. The file name system works exactly as I've described, but the flaw is that sometimes that first random character might be a number also. So, let's take clip 122, with random digits of "4X". The total filename would look like this: "1224X00.AVI". Now, you could break it out like I did before and you'd see that it's "1224X00.AVI", so it's not really a bug, right? It's working like all the others. But the problem is, if you sort the files numerically, the Windows file manager and the Premiere import box and probably every other program won't see it as "1224X00.AVI", they'll all see it as "1224X00.AVI". And in my opinion that's a problem. And I have asked and begged the engineers to fix this bug, and the way to fix it would be to ensure that the first random character can never be a number. They so far have not fixed it. It works the same on the AC160 and AC130 as it does on the HMC80. All three units have DV mode, and they all create their file names the same.

To me this is a bug. I have complained about it. If you want to see it fixed, you should complain about it as well to those who are capable of fixing it. It's profoundly annoying, it means a simple sorting won't work.

Of course, there is another way to sort the files, just sort them based on creation date instead of filename and that will always work to show them in chronological order.

ООООООО!!!!!!! Barry, thanks for Yours scientific research. What for all is so difficult??? I as the simple user shouldn't penetrate into all this bosh (or science). I have paid 5000 dollars, and Panasonic must give me for my money normal names of files, like in FullHD mode!!!!!. Any mechanic or the joiner or the plumber won't penetrate into Your research and should have possibility to see simple names. Names of files should be accessible for visual manual sorting, and for the automatic sorting. It is the law or an axiom!!! Panasonic must recognise and correct this error and other numerous errors!!!!!

> If you want to see it fixed, you should complain about it

SOS!!
How and where may I complain about this and other problems?
Barry, I hope You will help me.

You should direct your complaints to Panasonic Russia, since that's the territory you're in. If the factory hears complaints from multiple territories they're more likely to listen. At least, that's what I think.

I know that this is an old thread but I was curious if this is still an issue, or did any of the updates fix this problem. I have two 160's that both have this issue, we have been considering doing the $300 upgrade to the cameras but just have not done it yet. Will this update fix this naming issue?

Thanks
Phil

My newly acquired AC160A with the latest firmware pre-installed still has the odd naming of DV files. So don't expect the upgrade to change that.

I think 130/160 is the last line of Panny cameras that will make avi files. So I don't think they will "fix" their screwed up naming system
