GH4 sennheiser g3 into GH4 or H4N?

Just received my wireless G3 setup and Lavalier for recording interviews. Wondering if anyone records straight into the GH4 or via a H4N and sync in post

Interested to know the best settings on the G3 transmitter, receiver and the Gh4 or H4N if anyone uses this.

Think I will definitely a Gh4 cage system for all this equipment now!

I've done more than a few interviews with Sennheiser G system lavs straight into the GH4, sometimes as A cam and sometimes as a B (using one transmitter and two receivers). I peg the GH4 audio in level at -12dB and modulate the receiver's 'AF OUT' level to adjust. For the transmitter, adjust input levels so it peaks about halfway on the transmitter's meter.

Here's a sample posted a bit ago

Thanks mcbob

Great advice there and the sound quality is pretty decent, did you have to improve it much in post (i.e. i use voiceover effect in fcpx)?

Also, did you attach the recover to the shoe mount on the GH4 or use a cage?

Have you all sent your gh4's into get the buzz fixed or does yours not exhibit buzz?

I jist bought a Dr-60 MK2 for audio duties but was half tempted to record straight in to the Gh4... All that is holding me back is the lack of control during recording.

I prefer to send the mics into the H4N and send it's output into the camera. This gives me perfectly usable audio in my clips, but also a very high quality (24/48 .wav files) for backup, should anything happen with the camera during recording.

I send the audio directly into my GH4 and have used it on several professional shoots. The fidelity is not the same a recording into something with higher quality pre-amps. I can hear the difference when comparing them but I judged the quality adequate for what I was doing and the style of show I was shooting needed to be a single operator that was nimble and wouldn't attract attention. None of my producers had anything to say about the sound, in fact, the opposite. Which goes to say, that proper mic placement and intelligibility is more important than pre-amps or bit rate.

omnikron thats interesting, sound is very important (I can tell the difference with good and bad sound, but a client can't really tell between 'good' and 'very good' sound..

Think I may run a test for myself and see what the results are like

lav mic into a Tascam DR-60D, record 2 files (normal and -10db or whatever) as well as going into GH4. 3 audio files here, you never know.

with zero previous experience with clip on Lavs, Sennheiser mics/radios, I was handed one, out of the box, plugged it in to the GH4 and it did pretty good, I think:

The Lav sounded pretty decent (have to be honest i never watched all 28 mins or so but it was consistent all the way through. Nice Job

Thanks. I'm sure I did post cleanup, eq, and compression, but I was VERY IMPRESSED with the quality overall having literally throw it on the camera. I guess that is why it is like an industry standard.

did you use the lav that came with the sennheiser or a different one i.e. rode etc?

People have mentioned a 'buzzing noise' on this thread (earlier models of the gh4), did you encounter that?

It was the whole Senn kit: lav mic clip, wires, sender and receiver attached on the GH4 hot shoe. I've got a pretty early GH4, and it has that buzzing - I forget: isn't it only bad in 24hz mode or something? Even then, it is so low it has never caused me a problem. If the audio is so low buzzing shows up, one is using the wrong tool for the job: get an H4N or something external to capture specific, super quiet stuff.

To be honest, I never noticed the buzzing or any weirdness with the Sennheiser plugged in. Wasn't looking and it didn't stick out. There is typical HISS that I noticed but that is found everywhere.

I have an early GH4 and have tested for the buzz and can't hear anything like others have been posting online. I'm thinking the difference is i am shooting in PAL-land at 25p. Maybe it's only a NTSC issue?

BTW I'm recording straight in to the GH4 and have found the sound to be pretty good. I've compared to my C100 audio recordings and it's every bit as clean.
