Sending the fs700 to sony for upgrade

This thread has jumped the shark. I own the camera and was an early adopter. i read every ad and promotional piece countless times. I almost bought an AF100 or a Canon 5D MkIII. I bought the FS700 instead. How come I'm happy? Am I an idiot? Did I miss the part where Sony made all these promises of a 4K free firmware upgrade with a cheap recorder the size of a walnut? When I see threads like this I think that some people may have too much time on their hands...
I call this the "Lotto Winner Complainer's Syndrome"
"Congratulations you just won 5 million dollars!!!"
"Yeahhhh, but all those TAXES I have to pay, waughhh..."
Just shoot some great footage. If you get a better 4k solution for less money, by ALL MEANS please take advantage of that!

+1

For Dan Keaton and Mike Schell...
Just want to let you guys know I have an Odyssey 7Q on pre-order and my name in the queue with Sony for an upgrade. Like the features you're offering and the work you're doing.

Dear Cuervo,

Thank you for your vote of confidence!

Respectfully,

Dan Keaton

You got my vote too! Thanks for all your help and patience Dan. No doubt you've raised the stakes for a lot of us who own the camera and yes I am thankful to Sony for adding the odyssey into the mix. (despite my frustrations) ha. I'll be looking forward to updates and can't wait for the release.

Best always,
Anthony

I have what is perhaps a dumb, post-upgrade question: After Sony's 4k firmware and hardware upgrade process, will this upgrade affect the internal recording at all? Will everything remain the same in-camera as it was before the upgrade? (Frame rates options, etc...)

I have neglected to point out that the upgraded FS700 has a 4K burst mode, which can record 4K at 120 fps for 4 seconds, into a buffer, then output this buffer into an external recorder. The same applies to the 480 fps and 960 fps modes.

We fully expect to be able to support these modes.

To the best of my knowledge, at this moment, our engineering team has not tested this yet, but I do not expect any problem.

Dear Dan,

I appreciate your commitment in informing about CD's work. I'm interested in finding out if you have any news in this area. Since the 2k raw output seems to be severely flawed in high frame rates, it would be good to know if the Odyssey 7Q will be able to record 4K 120 fps bursts.

Regarding the matter what Sony did or did not promise, I am not particularly fond of the idea of sending my camera for hardware upgrading, since that was never advertised. I use my camera for work and sending it away is a risk in not being able to do a job or for the camera breaking in transport, causing even more problems. To my opinion Sony is damaging their reputation by this and a fair compensation for that would be to give you the permission to make the 7Q as capable as their own recorder in recording the output from the FS700.

As so many have stated there's probably no one who will purchase the Sony-recorder for their FS700 only. I've seen it on F5 and F55, and there it's a completely different deal since it's integrated with the camera in a completely different way and the camera can run from the same battery. I'm not sure if you're in any place to make suggestions to Sony without risking your cooperation, but if you are, please let them know that there are customers out there who would really appreciate if we could do this on the 7Q and that their own recorder isn't an option and will never be.

It took me months after paying until I received my FS700 (I payed it in mid July and received it in mid November), at the same time the F5/F55 was announced. Now I'm a bit disappointed about how all this have worked out, since it seems I just could've saved up a bit more money and bought an F5 instead, if I would go for Sony's recorder option. So if they choose to cripple the output to the 7Q I might as well start considering to sell my camera instead and go for some other manufacturer. If I make that choice I will probably not buy a Sony camera in a very long time, since I tend not to make the same mistake twice.

Best regards,
Milan

This was already answered. 120 fps is 4 sec burst and CD should be able to record that (but NOT in RAW, I bet).

You can put the camera on ebay. I bet you will get most of the money back. There is no reason to live unhappy. Just put the camera on ebay and buy a better camera from another manufacturer and live happy ever after.

No, it has not been answered. I didn't ask about what it should be able to do, I asked what it will be able to do. There is a difference.

Evilthought, I must say your behaviour intrigues me. You sound like a broken record. Has it ever occurred to you that no one cares what you think and that they might care even less if you just keep repeating the same thing over and over again? As I stated above I use my camera for work. I'm pleased with some of it's features and the reason I addressed Mr Keaton is obvious - I want it to become what Sony advertised. Something tells me that Mr Keaton is better suited for answering me, which is exactly why I directed my question to him and not to you. Therefore it's very interesting to see that you tried to answer it. So what did your attempt of answering it consist of?
1. An answer to a question I didn't ask.

2. A suggestion to sell my camera if I don't like it and in doing so it will make me happy. You've suggested the same thing to several people in this thread before and in your answer to me you said the same thing twice, in four sentences.

Very impressive, indeed. You're a genius!

Milano, I think the point is... Nobody here really cares whether or not you buy another Sony. No, really.
Most of us just shoot great footage with a very high quality tool and deal with the reality of what is.
So PLEASE! Do us all a favor and buy an F5 instead and share that unbelievable crisp 4K footage that we know you are capable of shooting.

Pot calling the kettle black. I think I've seen more posts of you complaining about Sony.

That's very good for you ksteiger, and I'm surprised that you also have a difficulty in understanding that I didn't address you. Why do you assume that I would care what you think? Some of you here seem to have a big problem in understanding that my question was directed to Mr Keaton. So if you don't care, why comment it? Have you really nothing better to do than to reply to something that wasn't directed to you and that you don't care about? The point with a forum is simple: you can write something and those who might want the information can take part of it, those who don't can just let it be. You won't see me comment things that aren't directed to me. Why? Because I really think that people have a right to have an opinion without me bitching about it, and most of all I don't care if someone doesn't share my opinion, they are entitled to have their own. That's what not caring really means. But, if you address me with stupid comments, then you will get an answer. I feel that it's my responsobility as a human being to let others know if they're inconsistent, which you are. Hopefully this will help you in the future.

Oh, really? Where and when might that be? Since my question to Mr Keaton is my first post on dvxuser, that seems very strange. I'm glad that you're able to think, thanks for sharing your interesting thoughts. Apparently there's not a pot here, but someone else might have smoked a little bit to much of it and it is definitely not me. :engel017:

Hi milan all due respect i think jshbckr was referring to evilthoughts in his post. He was sticking up for you pointing out all the anti Sony posts from evilthoughts previous threads before this one.

Am I on facebook or am I am on a professional community. Guys Don't take it to the heart we have a great a camera in our hand but not everyone are going to be happy with this camera even if it has 10bits etc. There are also something to complaint about doesn't matter which camera we use. My 2 cents. This is an awesome place to hang out. We should just take it easy.

its pretty easy to look back at evil thoughts post history and see that he is not interested in contributing to this community in a helpful way. as 99% of his posts are about sony products it appears that he works for them in some form or another. he is very abrasive towards any negative comments directed at the shady dealings of sony and their false advertising with this camera. he has been asked if he even owns an fs700 and he fails to reply. quick to call people out and moonlighting as a know it all. im doing my best to just ignore users like this. it sucks that people really looking for answers in this thread have to deal with biased employees of the corporation that is trying to cya. but that's how it goes on the internet. anybody can say whatever they want whenever they want. i think the best thing to do is for someone to contact a lawyer and find out what our options are in this situation. in evil thoughts infinite legal wisdom apparently non of us have a case in the fact that we are getting something different than what was originally advertised. i would love to find out if he is right. that being said, anybody know any good lawyers?

I honestly don't see how there would be a legal case against Sony. They sold a camera with a 4K sensor and a promise that future functionality would be unlocked with two things: firmware upgrade and additional hardware (not included, would cost money)

There was no indication of cost. Many of us even looked toward the F3's firmware upgrade (several thousand dollars) as an indicator that it may not be a realistic update path.

The reality of the situation is that Sony didn't make any promises about cost. I feel like the arguments here rely on the interface unit as the key item that Sony "lied" about. What if they just made a bigger plastic enclosure and put both the interface unit and the recorder inside and called it "FS700 external recorder" and slapped a $10k price tag on it? I assume that would be OK because it would be the single-item solution they "promised".

I'd say so. It's no longer about sending the FS700 in.

Maybe to bring it back on topic:

I was instructed to email the service center and that I'd be contacted when I can send in my 700. Anyone else get told to do this? If you did, have you received a response?

I was contacted by my dealer with instructions and when I called the sony service ctr (teakneck NJ) I was told to email my request and they since responded with "when the update was available they will contact me to let me know". They have my email address. Hopefully they'll email me the instructions soon and we'll see what happens. IMHO it's actually a good thread, it's the only place where our frustrations are heard. I agree no sense beating a dead horse and let's get back to more constructive gear talk and keep each other informed. I love my camera, and I'm sure we can all agree on the information Dan Keating has provided has been promising so far. I'm confident once we see the new footage no one will complain. So far even the 8-bit S-log didn't look half bad. Time will tell though I am confident and look forward to this upgrade. Now does anyone want to buy a slightly used pix 240??? Haha. Joking but may not be soon. Stay tuned :)
