GH13 Selling footage question

Is it normal to only receive payment after you have delivered the footage? I was hoping to secure half of the amount before hand, but they tell me that this is not the industry standard.

Any help or info from people who have done this before would be greatly appreciated?

I guess the problem is that it is being delivered to another country so there is no repercussion if they do not pay. Has anyone been shafted after delivering the footage?

you are the service provider. you make the terms. if they dont like it, they can go elsewhere.

too many times in this business we let ourselves get shafted at both ends. when you go to a camera store, do you tell them when youre going to pay? no. THEY DO. i dont know why we as service providers so often let our customers dictate the terms.

of course the other end of that conversation is how much do you want their business. 30 days is typical terms in the business world and id imagine most of us have at one time been stiffed one way or another - because it comes down to who has a better attorney and is it worth the time to sue.

in 20 years in the business ive learned to smell potential schemers a mile away and will tell them i have a strict 50-50 payment policy. if they cant work with that, then id probably have gotten screwed or spent months chasing them for payment anyway.

another thing ive done in the last couple years is offer a 5% discount for payment on delivery. clients seem to appreciate the savings and its a small price to pay to not have to wait for or chase checks...

Typically I will send low-res heavily watermarked preview footage.
They can see if it will work in their project.....
If they want the high-res version it is payment first - 100%.
I usually send a pay-pal invoice that can be paid with a credit card
from anywhere in the world. If they balk at paying that way then
I tell them I will always be ready for their business.
I don't accept checks from out of state or overseas clients.

I agree with HVXguy - None of the stock sites will sell you footage for 1/2 down and a net 60... watermark a low res copy and send them the full deal when they've paid in full. Isn't worth taking a chance.

Yep. If you haven't worked with them before this is the way to go.

Would love to see what you were able to get sold... Any chance we can get a preview?
in low rez and with heavy watermark goes without saying. (unless you have an NDA with the company)

The low rez+watermark is my solution as well. Think of it like ordering on Amazon. You see a small picture, you pay then you receive your package. Same here.

I would really like to see the res too - Maybe with two 45 degree lines of watermark all the way across if (with no way of cropping out) - I am just getting into my GH2 and would like to see what others in the market are able to get sold.
