Sell FS700 for a FS7?

It's really simple, the only thing the FS7 has over the FS700 is the internal 4k and shouler mount, if you want/need these, then sure upgrade, if you don't, the FS700 with the 7Q does everything tge FS7 does.
It also has the handle with customisable buttons on it. This is huge. If sony let us at least assign something to the useless Photo button on the FS700 handle it would make a world of difference.
For me, internal HD in XAVC is also a big thing for the FS7.

Okay lets be a little more accurate with wording: the only advantage of the FS7 vs the FS700 is the ergonomic design and internal codec options. A FS700 + 7q has more recording power than a bare bones FS7, and the same recording options as an fs7 + 7q but with the advantage of the nicer ergonomics and internal codec options,

it comes down to how important these are to you.

Exactly, and to me the better internal codecs are more than enough. The 7Q is overkill and cumbersome.
I did not go for the FS7 however so now my hope is that I can some day afford the 7Q or the Shogun if they prove to provide a good enough feature set with the FS700.

To answer a few questions posted here:

- FS7 does not have the memory buffer that the FS700 has. So no short bursts with post trigger of HD high speed while waiting for an event to occur and no 4K RAW 120p burst.

- Odyssey7Q will have programmable LUTs in future with a way to choose to record them.

- Noah is correct that it is unknown at this time how high a frame rate we will be able to push ProRes to. We'll take it to as fast as we can, but it remains to be seen.

- Switching frame rates and recording modes on the Odyssey7Q is very simple. For frame rates the Odyssey7Q auto-detects whatever is sent to it. For recording modes there is a straightforward drop-down menu for this, so maybe two button presses instead of one.

FS700 + 7Q also has 120fps burst @ 4K, which to some is a big deal. The debatable factor is whether there's significant image improvement between the two models. That's, perhaps, worth the upgrade.

On the XDCA-FS7 adaptor on the lower right of the back there is a small rectangular connector that says In/Out. Does anyone know what it does?

Actually me too. The 4K 10bit XAVC compressed hits my sweet spot of image formats, it's 4K giving cropability, 10 bit so quite gradeable (for someone who finds 8bit 4:2:0 h.264 gradeable enough for most uses) and it's compressed to internal XQD cards with all the joy compression brings to the workflow, I think the 10 bit compressed 4K codecs (Prores, xavc, dnxhd, etc) is going to dominate the future of formats. It's just perfect for nearly all uses.

The FS700 is a great camera but the internal 10 bit 4K is just too tempting. I wish the FS700 price hadn't dropped that far recently, it would have made the choice easier, now the fs700 is very tempting too! Can the FS700 do compressed 4K 10bit when coupled with the 7Q? and can the camera and recorder be integrated in a way to shoot handheld (i.e, c300/fs7) effeciently or does it have to turn into a frankenstein rig?

"Only?" The internal codec thing is so HUGE of an advantage, and I own a 7Q. Internal LUTS, a small 10-bit code is so great for lower budget / fast turn around quick jobs. Pro-Res 422HQ file sizes and S-Log 2 only, is not ideal for many lower budget jobs.

Thanks for the clarification. It always sounded like you were on the fence about offering LUTs for recording due to concerns of user error, but I guess that's changed? That's very good news to me. Hopefully it's less than 3months away along with Prores LT and 422?

The autoswitching sounds good but my concern was that if all framerates are not supported in prores, not only will we be stuck switching modes and recording much less manageable DNGs for high framerates, but doing so would require switching programs on the 7Q which means at least a reboot and at worst a 3min process of loading the program... far far less convenient than one button and a couple seconds that it will take on the fs7.

Any updates on what appears to be possible for prores high framerates?
And a bIt OT but how about 4k hdmi? Seems like CD went from saying there would be a 4k hdmi upgrade option to now it sounding like no one knows if or how it will happen. Did I misunderstand this?

The LUT recording question was really a matter of how would we implement it without causing confusion or the tragedy of recording the "wrong" way. But we think we have the methodology licked.

If a frame rate is not supported then it is not supported. In that case you would have to switch to RAW. But once you load RAW in the first time then switching will only take maybe 10 seconds.

No updates we are prepared to share on ProRes frame rates.

We have never changed our stance on 4K HDMI. We will have a solution but are not saying yet. In large part it is because we are exploring multiple ways of doing this and we do not yet know which we will be able to make available and/or which we can make available first.

I've decided on the FS7- but since I won't shoot another feature until next year, I'm going to wait for the price to (hopefully) drop. The built in codec is exactly what I'm looking for. My FS700 just went on Ebay with no reserve, and is listed in the gear for sale section here. I'll miss it - best camera I've owned so far.

The only problem I see with the formats is that to shoot 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 at 60 fps you will run through a $800 128GB card in...22 minutes! I shoot action sports so I most often shoot 60 fps. Not sure if I could afford enough cards (and hard drives) to manage that. But the only other 4K option at 60 fps is 8 bit 4:2:0 which is less than ideal.

I guess that is just the nature of shooting high quality 4K footage.

I don't see this problem. 4K 60fps is no documentary format. If you're on a scripted shoot it should't be a problem. If you are collecting footage for documentary 1080 4:2:2 will be thoroughly sufficient probably even in Long 50mbs.

in this weeks i'm thinking about it.. and I don't see a real upgrade in image quality from fs700 to fs7.. it looks really similar..
and anyway I need a better codec than avchd so I have to buy a recorder like Odyssey 7Q for prores or RAW.
With fs700 I need to buy the odyssey 7Q and go..
if i want to get the fs7, i have to sell the fs700 at a low price (after drop street price), buy a fs7,buy a odyssey 7, buy an external unit to connect the the odyssey to fs7.. I don't know the total price but for my situation I think it's not interesting change for a fs7.. what do u think about it?
thank u!

FS700+O7Q is clearly the cheap alternative. You also need FS7 media which is expensive.

However, it would depend on the use.

Outdoor one man banding = FS7

Studio shooting = FS700

My two cents.

Well at least 8bit 420 4k still has more bit depth and color information than 10b 444 HD. I'd say try out XAVC-L before judging against it. But yeah at least the option is there for longer form. Also don't forget you can put two cards In and shoot for ~44min continuously. And XQD is media is new and not proprietary so prices will drop as adoption increases and more manufacturers build cards.

I'm using FS700 for controlled situation, not for event..
For event, one man banding I'm using GH4..

for this i'm quite dubious about sell the fs700 for fs7 that have a better quality codec but expansion unit for sdi and card.. that put the pive to much hight if i need of raw..

Not sure it's really the cheap option. FS700+7Q is $8500 vs FS7 $8000, and media is the same price per min. For $800 of media, CD's SSD is 4x the size but its 4k prores is 4x the size of XAVC-I. And power consumption is nearly equal but 7Q requires more rigging.

He said he already owns FS700. That makes it a different calculation. He also has to buy an OLED monitor with the FS7. Thats two major investments right there, tipping the scale in favour of the FS700 O7Q.
