GH4 Secret Appearance of the GH4 at SXSW Tomorrow

I've got a pre-release GH4 with me here at SXSW for another day or so. If you are in Austin and want to see it in person and even shoot a little with it, feel to message me through the Hot Rod Cameras Facebook page. The notifications appear on my phone.

I'll be posting some pics and more information soon. We just participated in a 9x camera shootout that included the following cameras:

Panasonic GH4
Blackmagic 4K
Alexa
Red Epic
Red Dragon
Sony F55
Canon C500
Canon 1DC
Canon 5D3 (Magic Lantern Hacked)

GH4, 2x hours of media, and a spare battery all fit in my average sized jacket pocket, which is pretty darn cool. I pulled the GH4 out half way so you can see.

Cool. Looking forward to the shootout.

One quick question: Jello... Some clips posted here a few days ago showed a lot of wobble. Did you see any of this in your time using the camera? Any modes? Thanks.

Haha, awesome offer - have tons of fun, Illya!

And of course we can't wait to hear about that test.

BTW, can yours output 4K HDMI live?

According to DPReview, the HDMI can output 4K streams:

But according to Mitch Gross, it might need the YAGH?

Believe it! 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 is an option to output directly from camera body HDMI (at least in Firmware V0.3) However, that doesn't mean you don't want the YAGH though- especially if you want to record that signal, you definitely do want it.

Don't blame Mitch for getting this wrong. I'm certain Mitch was repeating information that came originally from Panasonic in the pre-announement days. Specs/features were different then and the (still unnamed) YAGH was a requirement for clean uncompressed 4K recordings not that long ago. This is particularly important for the folks at Convergent Design, who make an awesome product to record the 4K uncompressed from the GH4.

You should be glad the camera has changed a LOT since development began and we are all getting some truly epic features included now.

On a related point Hot Rod Cameras competes with dealers who never heard of the GH4 before last month, and some of them have been spreading misinformation. IMHO, those folks have no excuse.

Unlike big box shops, and other dealers incapable of doing so- we test everything for ourselves. From the test I mentioned in the first post, here's another pic from our Facebook page

Thanks for the awesome info, Illya.

I'm not holding you to it if Panasonic decides to take out camera 4K HDMI out at the last minute - but thank you for doing what you guys do (and I'm sure, speaking to Panasonic and advocating on our behalf for stuff like this). If you look at the YAGH, it does kinda look like it just plugs into the existing HDMI that the GH4 sends out (and adds other stuff of course).

Anyway, I am probably going to order quite a few GH4s, heheh. So yes - I emailed you RE placing a pre-order too!

Yay! Enjoy SXSW!

Illy thanks for confirming! Thats a big one we just kept getting confusing info on and it's so cool. 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 out of Micro HDMI. Crazy stuff!

It's cool, but the problem is, there are no decent priced recorders to record that 4K 4:2:2 10 bit HDMI signal.

Agree. There is this thing called NAB that I'm hoping for though.

I'd love to see a 4K Sound Devices box with 2 great XLR preamps and an extra 2 audio inputs that records 4K 4:2:2 10bit from HDMI into ProRes or 4K DNxHD (whenever that gets announced) with 4 audio channels and timecode would be pretty sweet... it'd be like an enhanced YAGH except it actually records!

I'm sure they'll make something like that at some point. The first step is for someone to make the camera that outputs the format... and thanks to the GH4 that just happened!

Thanks, Illya! - and also for reminding us that we should support dealers that are testing and providing valuable technical information. GH4 is on my radar. Sold my GH2 but held back one lens pending the GH4 announcement.

Now recorders have to catch up. Never ends. Just when HD started to get easy. LOL!

that doesn't mean you don't want the YAGH though- especially if you want to record that signal, you definitely do want it.

Why? I mean, I really don't want the YAGH for most of my work, but it would be nice to have a small external recorder to get 10 bit 4:2:2. So what makes you say I should want the YAGH?

I was sworn to secrecy, so all I can tell you is the external recorder you all want will be coming in the not-too-distant future from a company whose name begins with A.

LMAO!!

I own an FS700 and I am planning on getting a GH4. If I didn't have the FS700, the A company would be a solid consideration but I need a recorder that record from both the GH4 and the FS700 and the only one that does that right now is the Odyssey. Unless.....maybe......Sony starts licensing the rights to record from the FS700 to other companies, that would be cool to have an option.

Did the A company happen to include a decent audio option on their latest recorder?

+1

Im asking the same question. Why wouldn't we want to record the 4K 10bit 422 signal the HDMI spits out?

Also, any definitive info on the GH4's dynamic range? DR is ten times more important to me than 4K.
