C300: second SDI out on C300M2 for Paralinx Ace on Movi Pro & shoulderrig

dear all,

just installed the paralinx ace, works like a charm!
however, I would need the advice from a Canon C300M2 person:

is it possible to use the rec out as a sdi out?

I need the 'monitor out' for my either Movi Pro monitor or shoulderrig monitor.

On the Movi I could, if there's no solution, use the sdi out from my SmallHD, but on the shoulderrig I use a Zacuto Gratical Eye, which has no SDI loopthrough, so I really would like to figger out if there is a way to acces the rec out as a vidosigna out.

Do any of you has the answer?

I don't need display info cause it's just for playback/client view.

I can't figure out what menu settings I have to use, I have tried allmost every setting, but probably missed sthe right one.

The choices for external monitoring and recording are pretty confusing to me on the C300m2. Trying to navigate the options for using the LCD, EVF, and various SDI and HDMI jacks gets messy fast. On one shoot, I tried using my Ninja Blade with loupe as an EVF for critical focus. I figured I might as well record on the Blade at the same time as the internal Cfast and SD slots. Why not? I spent an hour or so getting my rig perfect, and I thought I was golden.

Turns out I somehow manged to record a perfectly lovely image on the Blade--with the addition of the red peaking from the camera! I'm a genius.

The Rec Out terminal will follow your shooting resolution. So if you are shooting 2K or 4K instead of HD or UHD, then that signal will be 2048x1080 2K. A lot of monitors and wireless video transmitters can only handle a 1920x1080 HD image, not a 2048x1080 2K Image.

You also need to confirm that the Rec Out terminal is on and not sending out 4K RAW. Go to your Menu>Recording Setup> REC OUT 4K RAW Mode and make sure it is set to 2K (again it will either be 2K or HD depending on your shooting mode).

thnx Macaholic, that was the solution!
lowered the rec out from $K raw to a lower res and that dit it!

I asked this in another thread. Anyone know how to get a Ninja Blade to accept the HDMI signal from a C300mkii when in 60p? I know the Blade only records at 60i, but it works with a C100mkii when it is set to 60p. I can't get it to work on the C300mkii.

Filmed a concert recently and they took a feed out of the rec out of the C300MKII for the big screen behind the stage and it worked fine.

Also, if you are shooting 12bit 444, the REC OUT will be 12bit 444 and there isn't a way to 'reduce' it to 422 10bit. AFAIK there isn't a wireless transmitter that can take the 444 12bit signal. If you record 422 10bit, in HD or UHD, the REC OUT will spit out HD 422 10bit as long as it's set to "2K" and not "4KRAW". The Monitor Out can letterbox 2048x1080 onto 1920x1080 signal out (or not, depending on setting) and it will also output 422 10bit when you record 444 12Bit. MONITOR OUT can also be set to 4KRAW for monitoring with one of Canon's monitors that can take that signal, or an Odyssey7Q or Atomos that can also take that 4K RAW signal.

You should also pay attention to the 3G SDI level if you shoot anything at 60fps. Your Zacuto Gratical Eye will most likely only take 3G SDI Level A (like the regular Gratical), while the C300mk2 defaults to 3G SDI Level B.

As mentioned above the REC OUT changes based on what signal type you are recording in the C300mk2. If it's 1920x1080 422 10bit, then you are probably fine plugging it into a screen. But if it's 444 12bit or 2048x1080 or a combo of those you might not be so lucky that you can feed the big screen with your REC OUT signal. You could also be shooting 422 10bit 60P and then REC OUT will be 60P.

Last note from me: This is exactly why I try to always carry an Odyssey7Q when I shoot with the C300mk2 (and Alexa Mini too, and if I shot with the Varicam LT I would too...) because the O7Q can take any of the signals coming out of the C300mk2 and send out a simple 1080/30P 422 1.5G SDI signal, with or without a LUT. Which everybody and their grandmother can accept.

I had no idea, thanks for the info. Lucky I was shooting 1080 422. It was such a rush and the tech guy just plugged straight in and it all worked. If I was shooting 12 bit 444 which is normally the case there might have been some head scratching. Really good to know.
