Second Generation DVX-100?

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

wow thanks shrunk.. the info seems pretty good and believable... not worth me trading in yet, but as soon as the 16x9 ccd's come good by old and in with the new :)

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

I do hope the rumored part about it NOT having interlaced modes isn't true. But everything else looks awesome. I'd buy it today if it was 1) available 2) also has interlaced modes.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

YW, Zoom

I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost right now, assuming the new price difference (if we can believe the initial pricing).

I'm very interested in the 16:9 ccd's as well. Rumour has it that Canon and Sony will be coming out with a competitive model in the near future utilizing 16:9.

Seems to be the usual runaway train aspect of technology - train's moving fast, should I get onboard now or wait? Time waits for no one.

I still believe that a quality production can be accomplished regardless of where technology is going. Cameras, lenses...photographers....seems I heard that quote somewhere.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

Sir Allen,

Auto-focus is a bit of an issue for me in "run and gun" applications. I welcome that addition, and bemoan the loss of 60i to some degree (assuming initial rumours to be true).

Exactly. One can spend their whole life waiting for the next one. There is inevitably a next generation DVX100 coming and then another and then another and so on and so on...

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

New camera announcements are rarely conducted via a fansite BBS. It is also exceptionally unlikely (and I mean EXCEPTIONALLY unlikely) that they would modify the body of the camera to add a USER3 button. I could have bought into some of this if it had stayed in the realm of software updates only (i.e., adding 16:9 squeeze) but when you add talk of modifying the body (and thus the magnesium alloy chassis, etc) to add buttons, that throws the believability right out the window.

I've been talking with Steve Golub about enhancements that I'd like to see to the camera, all software, and so far the response has been discouraging -- they are very happy with the camera as-is, think they are offering phenomenal value at the price point, and will likely not be making any changes as long as it continues to sell so well. I would be floored (absolutely floored) if this rumored DVX100A had any truth to it at all, especially this soon -- the camera has just hit its 1-year anniversary!

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, and I know I'm going out on a limb to say it ain't so, but I feel pretty confident in saying "it ain't so".

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

although lots of people have said thay wished the DVX had the XL1's body (if only for sex appeal). Perhaps PANASONIC has realized this?

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

i don't think it's a true 16:9.. just a squeezed image, like in pd-150

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

but man... . . . looks like it's going to be the hottest camera around.. panasonic are my heroes!!!! upgrading a camera even before getting an "answer" to the DVX from canon or sony.. they are great!!!

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

id have to agree that it seems very unlikely for panasonic to make any sort of modifications to the body of the dvx just to add a user 3 button. a newer camera will inevitably come out sooner or later, but if it was in dec, i would assume that the U.S. as well as other divisions of panasonic would have been made aware of it, and have made some announcments already.
as well as it is very unlikely that they would drop the 60i modes from the camera.. adding the functions that they are describing are all small changes which are software based(setting aside the user3 button), and there would be no reason to lose the 60i function(which i assume is a hardware backed implementation), espescially with the higher price point. it just isnt logical.
...not that it matters anyway
great news if its in any part true.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

If I was Panasonic, I'd make the "Index" button the 3rd User button, and make Index assignable to User buttons. If they did it this way, then there wouldn't need to be any modifications to the body.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

if this is for real most of the changes are software ones so what are the chances that the EEproms on the current model DVX could be upgraded to give us some more functions. Not that there are all that many things I'm missing on my camera but there are a few things I can think of. :) I know a lot of the Sony cameras can be modified to give more functions.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

that is awesome. I was wishing for the 60i to go away. but why the price increase? it should decrease!

still waiting for an ideal 24p mini-dv for filmmakers. but it is an unbeatable camera.
and i hate the body of the XL-1. i hate them colors too.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

The auto focus in progressive mode was there in the first demo prototype of the DVX. There where some reliability/performance issues with it though so they removed it in the production version, I assume they worked that bug out now. Remember the camera we are all slinging around is the first version of the camera.. and Panasonic hit it pretty good considering.

Even the build quality... I dont know if it was luck, but the last feature I worked on with the DVX one of the cameramen was running full tilt shooting a chase scene (so fast that his cable minder lost him) and he took a dive.. the camera hit the ground and BOUNCED a few times at least 6 feet in the air. Camera was fine, and actually was still rolling when it stopped. Pretty fun footage to watch.

This is the first camera that has changed alot of film people's minds on shooting video, The XL1 just never did it. Upgrade or no upgrade, we gotta be happy with what we all have in our bags.

WHAT?! Are you for real?! That's wild; encouraging. Kind of...

I am very happy and imagine I will have this Cam for quite sometime. I think this camera is capable of doing almost anything one would want.

Everyone's waiting for the next BIG THING; and when that comes out; there will be complaints about that as well! Will anyone ever get it right? I doubt it.

The DVX kick a**.

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

Yes.. for real. It was insane and everyone kinda held thier breath, as the camera was actually just purchased by one of the producers 2 days before the shoot who is also a Senior Stunt Co-ordinator. And trust me.. you dont wanna piss off those stunt guys.

even funnier is that I was shooting the scene at the same time from another stationary angle with another DVX and I swear to god I heard a cry from my camera as that camera bounced :)

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

Hi all

I started the thread at 2-pop and actually omitted the important thing - NO extra button for USER 3, it's just you can assign USER 3 to "Index", exactly as SirAllen pointed out.

As far as I read the original post about this rumor, it is very reliable, though you never know...

Re: Second Generation DVX-100?

If it's true, I'll have to wait yet again for my camcorder. ;D Well if the release date is December (or worst case January) I guess I could wait, and continue to rent in the mean time.

Hey Zoom, you have to post the footage.
