Seattle - Gh2 Driftwood Hack

Filmed this yesterday in Seattle just for fun, all with a Nikon 35mm f2 AI-S. I apologize for the shakiness, first time i've shot with this cam, didn't mean for it to be so jittery. Still looking into getting a rig for stabilization, but for now i'm just goin handheld ;)

I used the driftwood spanmyb*tch up patch for this (not sure what the bitrate on this is).

Only very slight CC to match scenes better

Jittery footage is the bane of the GH1/GH2. It turns otherwise cinematic footage into a home-made video. Not only does the jitter introduce jello, but the jitter in and of itself belies the source of the footage as a "cheap" hand-held camera, and it's just plain hard on the eyes. I shoot GH1 and find that my best results are off a tripod, plain and simple. I've tried adding weight with various shoulder setups, but the jitter is still not pleasing to me.

I thought your footage was otherwise pretty. Adding weight to your camera would reduce jitter somewhat, or stick to a tripod I suppose. I'ver tried doing hendheld with a small tripod that I hold in the air (thereby adding weight) and it reduced jitter, but still not enough for my liking.

Thanks man! Got any tips for stabilization? I'm used to shooting with a HMC150 with optical stabilization.. I've been spoiled haha.

Tuck your elbows into the center of your chest and bring the camera up as close as possible to your face. This should help somewhat with the shake. The farther out you hold your camera without bracing it to anything the shakier it will be.

any sort of camera rig helps

Strap tension can help

One strategy is to use a small tripod like a gorilla pod against your forearm or chest to add another contact point
