SDI Output Overlay

My basic understanding is that it is not possible to overlay camera display data onto the video outputting the HD-SDI output on the AF100, such as timecode window, audio metering, etc. Is this correct? Am I correct that the SDI output is always only clean video, with TC signal (but no overlay).

And I am quite certain I've heard that the HDMI output is only video, no display info.

Thanks for sharing what you may know.

It is my understanding that the type of data you are describing would accompany the footage as metadata. You would really want to have a clean video signal out of the camera without frames etc.
The whole Adobe editing thing now is built around metadata from script through editing, with word search and other really cool features.

I can't find it right now but I remember Barry saying in another thread that you can have the display items outputted via HDSDI and HDMI if you want and it can toggle on or off in the menu. I then asked the question if you could send the info out the HDSDI and not the HDMI or vice versa so you could record to a Nanoflash with one and the script supervisor could still get the timecode on the monitor, but I didn't receive an answer.

I seem to remember that it is NOT possible to have the overlays on the SDI because of the danger of inadvertently burning it into footage.

Perhaps this has been changed in the release model, but I've not heard of it.

There are some features requested that are very dangerous; I don't even like the delete last clip feature, although I'm sure it's handy for certain kinds of work. Storage is such a non-issue for this camera, I prefer the safety of no delete feature.

My own advice is to be extremely careful about what one assigns to the user keys; hitting one by accident can have unpleasant consequences.

Good shooting and best regards,

Well my main reason for asking this is to determine what will show up on client monitors. I know it would be very helpful to have a time code displayed at times for note taking. I am also considering the Teradek Cube, HD-SDI, which transmits video wirelessly via network, and am wondering what might become of the metadata, and whether any streaming players could display the TC if it is not in the visible video signal.

My usual way of working is to have the time code overlaid on the "client" monitor so hero takes can be noted. Unfortunately, I don't believe this is possible with the AF100, so we're back to the camera op calling the numbers aloud. Probably requires a second SDI output to view the TC and as we request extra pro feature, the price has to increase.

I don't know how many of us will elect to record to an outboard device, but a clean signal is absolutely required for this.

I think it's best to enjoy the capabilities of the AF100 or choose something else when the shoot demands it.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

After the Verse shoot we went to a local rental house to demo the camera. I remember there being some information on the 17" monitor that we quickly turned off in the menu. I can't recall if it was just framing lines/audio/pause & record, or also timecode, focal length, etc.

Because the first scene on the first day was also recorded with the nano flash, we pulled a clean signal off SDI for the rest of principal photography. Not sure how it reappeared at the rental house, but it didn't last long before we went back to a clean signal.

There was something there, though.

I wish Barry would see this thread, he could answer this pretty quick. I've looked a bit in the manual, but I think I need to look harder. It's not a deal killer of course, but I'd like to know because it helps inform as to whether I can order the HDMI version or the Teradek or if the extra cost of the HD-SDI version would be worth it for transmitting the video wirelessly.

By choosing OSD On, it will send the display info signal out of the HD-SDI and the HDMI. Turn it off it won't be there. This is a menu item.

Best,

Jan

We may get an official word on that, but I'm gonna guess that you get the same for both HDMI and SDI. Just a wild guess there.

But I'm glad to know it is an option to send that out.

Yeah it'd be nice if it was an option to do either or, but I'm sure it's probably all or nothing. I'd like to see a menu option much like the camera tally light (Off, Front, Back, Both), the options could be, off, HDSDI, HDMI, Both.

No. You can overlay all the normal stuff on the HD-SDI output and HDMI output. The only things that can't be output are the red focus assist, the EVF DTL, and the waveform/vectorscope. There might be one or two other things that I can't remember, but 90% of what you can display on the LCD, can be sent out the HD-SDI and HDMI if you want to. Or you can choose a totally clean video output, your choice.
