SD cards for high bitrate footage, discussion

Just an idea, with everyone buying all of these new expensive SD cards, why not set up a section with links to Amazon for the recommended cards and then set up an affiliate account that filters into the PayPal donations we already have going?

Might was well, right? We're going to be buying it anyways and we're doing it because of this hack, so it might as well generate some donation money. Of course, I don't know a whole lot about Amazon affiliate stuff or any legal issues, so it's just an idea.

Edit: Just skimmed through the terms, doesn't seem to prohibit what we'd be doing. Here they are, though: https://affiliate-program.amazon.co...ssoc-right-1&pf_rd_r=&pf_rd_i=assoc_join_menu

Transcend 16Gb class 6 card:

- recording stops after a few seconds 'squeezed' 1080p mjpeg
- dropped frames with the highest bit rate AVCHD
- AVCHD holds up at the 'c' settings as labelled on ptools 3.36

Just got a Panasonic 4GB Class 10. The benchmarks in Crystal Disk Benchmark are awesome, write speed of about 18mB/sec. That's faster than anything I've seen tested. Works great for AVCHD, but I still can't record any MJPG, it fails after just a few seconds.

No interest on the Amazon idea? Doesn't matter to me, but if it's not gonna happen I want to know soon because I'd like to buy one.

Barry - are you recording with the kit lens when using the Panny 4gb class 10 card? In my initial testing, recording with my Nikon AIS lens worked better than with the kit lens

It have easy explanation, as all Panasonic lenses have vingetting, CA and distortion corrections as far as I can understand.
So, any dumb manual lenses must be better.

Barry, did you test Sandisk Extreme III 16GB Class 10? Tom's Hardware tests show that as the fastest average, max, and minimum with higher scores than you're reporting for the Panasonic card. Maybe those would work? I'm about to order some of those and patch my firmware.

would be a good way of collecting some cash. some affiliats on electronics pay up to 10%. link to a GH13 = 100$ a pop
will be buying a card also. i would wait.

I've got the same card and had pretty similar results.
mjpeg only works if the frame has a very small amount of detail. The moment the frame gets complex it throws an error. I've manage to get some files to about 60mbps. This is with a manual canon lens, can't get it at all with the 14-140 lens.

I've used the AVCHD b-settings and works fine - at least no errors. Haven't tried higher yet.

Also tried a transcend 8gb class 6 and a Bytestor 8gb class 6. Again, no luck with the mjpeg, fine with AVCHD b-settings.

Once it has been established which sd cards are suitable it would be a good idea to put this info with full specs on the FAQ section.

"C" setting 16GB integral ultimaPRO class 6. native 24p/FHD
crazy samurai sword is ok but on a tripod at full zoom with 14-140 "motion was cancelled due to writing limitation of the card"
my question. is this realy the card or an automated message triggered by mistake?

Mount manual lens via adapter.
Or close lens contacts, if it is possible and try again.

All shots are high detail landsape on tripod with no movement.

i can turn camera off after short time.

Canon 50mm FD 1/50 f16
I STOPED recording after 5 min.

Do you think its the card?
P.S times are not regular.

I can confirm verbatim 32gb class 6 works for me. Only thin Samurai pan kills it! Like im ever going to need to use a crazy pan like that! lol
What I have also noticed if you get a write error...just press record after it refreshes and it may work...worked on a transcend card I have.
I would like to know the reliability of the sandisk extreme 3 200+ wotsit because I dont want to fork out for a expensive sdhc card and have it fail (might as well just buy another verbatim!)

strange thing is i can do the crazy sword ok for 5 min. but if i use the zoom furthur than (more or less) 25mm it freezes. "motion was cancelled due to writing limitation of the card"... after random amount of seconds.

So if its not a issue of card speed...and its the SD control...can this be fixed?...or is it something we'd have to live with as a price to awesome video? :-)

Get manual zoom, mount via adaptor and most probably you won't see any difference. With zoom on Panasonic lens you can have CA removal kicking in resulting in problems.
