SD card ...AVCCAM Restorer, confidence etc...

Has anyone lost footage to a SD card or had a problem with footage on an SD card?

( I read that Matt G had... in a recent thread .. which prompted this)

I had (have) an issue with my shoot day 2 ( card 2) . The data is on the card but refuses to ingest.

I had backed it up at the end of the day and have ingested that ( phew, lucky! very expensive shoot).

Now I am wondering about trying the Restorer Application on that card. Kind of an academic exercise but I am still editing the project and will delay doing so until I have completed the job.

Anyone used the 'Restorer' ?

My SD card confidence has taken a bit of a hit..I must add. Never had any issues with P2 ( which I miss very much)

That is the kind of story that strikes fear into braver men than me... You have always been a real advocate of this camera too.

Just out of curiosity, how many times has the card been used? What kind of card? Was there any unusual handling?

I have become very comfortable with P2 cards too, and in 4 years of intense use have never had a single problem... I am very nervous about depending on this over-the-counter media.

I ordered my AF100 in December for February delivery, which I delayed till March, then April. I have already spent over $3000 (Cineroid, Zuiko lens and Cine-Mod my Leica-R lenses) but I'm really considering canceling that order altogether and waiting for the next generation. P2 please?

I hope somebody responds to your post, because it's super important to those of us in the wings.

shooter,

can you give us some details like card make and model.
Was the card completely full or not.
were you copying the contents by drag and drop, or using some application like shotput?
also, was the initial transfer done on a mac and was the card locked when you mounted it to the computer?

Hey Mac.

Actually...I havent always been an advocate for the camera ( but I am now).... BUT... I was always concernd about a non I frame codec and also SD cards instead of P2.

Anyway. No one should panic at all ..but here's the detail.

Card #2 is a Transcend 16GB Class 10. ( I have 3 of them as well as others). Card one was used on the shoot and no issue.

Cards were backed up to HDrives mid way and end of shoot eachday. (Thank god)

Card #2 has 5.4GB of data.

Ingest of cards was by Copy and Paste ( Win7). Tried dragging Private Folder. Tried dragging individual files.

Card was locked - ABSOLUTELY!

I am not sure what the issue is but as per my post...considering the AVCCAM Restorer to se what it does. ( Academic only because I have do the data safely in my puter and backed up elsewhere. I believe it is maybe a broken index type issue)

I am only posting this because I am curious and never ever want a "heart stopper" like this one again ...and I am trying to restore my "confidence" at the same time.
That shoot day was like $75K ...(I do have production insurance but thats not the point)

I colleague was using my camera this past week and had a problem with one card. NO MATERIAL WAS LOST. THe card is a 32 gb card and would only allow 30 minutes recording time. Since I wasn't on set, I don't know what was done, but supposedly the card came back with the problem. I formatted the card in camera and its back to normal, So I dunno.

I do miss the security blanket of P2 when using this consumer commodity media.

One of my colleagues just sent me a message regarding this.

if you are on a mac, make sure you have done the latest software updates to your OS. Evidently Apple has updated their SDHC drivers and cards that were unreadable before the update suddenly were able to be read after it.

That's good to know Matt. I had an interesting issue with a GH2 card. OSX would NOT show the card as mounted, yet, when I went into the terminal and looked in /Volumes, it was there, and I copied the data out from it. This card had gone into a Windows machine unlocked so not sure if that caused anything. The AF100 card read no problem.

I am also using Transcend 16G class 10 and 1 32G class 6. The issue was with the 32G class 6. So far I have had no problems with the 16G cards myself. Will be interested to see what the software does!

My suggestion to Panasonic when they were asking for input was to allow for dual recording to both sd card slots for redundacy. I think Jan said it would raise the cost of the camera. Panasonic should reconsider this feature.

I have only had this happen to me once and the restorer did work. It happened because I switched to playback mode immediately after shooting and I wasn't aware that the card was still being written to causing a corrupt file.

Did you report to Panasonic? Sounds like something that could use some investigation to make sure this is what happened. I know I switch to playback quickly sometimes if I need to check a clip.

This is from Apple's support site regarding SDXC (it explains the issue Matt G and I had on our shoot with the card not recognizing):

"Will the SD card slot work with SD cards that use the exFAT file system?

Yes. Any Mac computer with an SD card slot and running Mac OS X v10.6.5 or later can use the exFAT file system. Note: If you are running Windows 7 using Boot Camp, the exFAT file system can be used only with the MacBook Pro (Early 2011)."

My laptop (MacBook Pro) was running 10.6.4, SDXC uses exFAT as the file system. That is why SDXC didn't work. Installed 10.6.6 , and it works flawlessly. This goes for plugging the camera in via USB as well.
