Script Fest?

At first glance, I like the idea of tying the ScriptFest to a DVX Fest of some sort, and then having all the ScriptFest entries available to film-makers for that Fest. The problem then becomes, what can you do for the winner(s) that gives them something a little extra-special? Not necessarily in the sense of a physical prize, more like just some extra bragging rights. So maybe it is better to keep this separate, with the prize being a special production by some of the forum heavyweights.

I'm sure the forum crew will be able to come up with the perfect solution to all this, of course. :) Certainly the film Fests seem to run very smoothly...

Now, where did I put that Screenwriter CD... :D

I just have one question, How come when I started this thread no one seemed to care?

This was an Idea I had, wouldnt it be kind of cool to have a filmfest where everybody does the same script just with their own vision of it, to see the different styles of filmmaking. like the winner of the filmfest gets his script made into different versions for one of the film fests.

Just a thought.

I think it became more prominent when people started talking about it in the "next DVXuser fest" thread. There's a lot more attention and traffic there, so maybe more people saw it and thought it was a good idea. Maybe some of the people considering entering haven't written a script before and want to try their hand at it and never saw your thread in the first place.

That idea's been discussed many many times, and we've even done it once (we had a fest where there was "one script to rule them all.") It wasn't one of the more successful fests, so we haven't revisited it.

I think we should have a good turn out. At least there was quite a bit of interest expressed over in the Love Fest area. I sure hope there are enough entries because writing is home for me, and I don't want this to be the last one.

While I'd be very interested in participating in a dvxuser ScriptFest, I'm not sure if it should be tied to the a dvxuser "film"Fest.

The process of acquiring, choosing, writing, re-writing, and implementing a script is part of the process of making a film for entry, the same way that acquiring, casting, and directing actors is part of the process. You could say that we should have a dvxuser cinematography contest, or a dvxuser acting contest, etc., etc. Scriptwriting is part of making films. And there are a lot of different ways that those involved in making the films use scripts. There are those that use a script, some film from a loose outline, and some don't bother to write down anything and instead shoot from the hip. None of these ways are correct or incorrect. If a script contest is connected to closely to a dvxuser film fest, I think you take some of the creativity away from the filmmaker. As the film fests stand now, he can write his own script, find somebody to write a script for him, collaborate in the creation of a script, pick up a spec script, or anything else he wants.

However, screenwriting I think does lend itself well to a contest/competition all in of itself. So I'd love to see a dvxuser ScriptFest, and I'd love to see scripts from that fest get produced into films, but I'm not sure there should be a film fest based on the script fest. Just my opinion, I'm game in any case.

Remember that writing a script is one thing, but getting it produced is something else entirely. I've had some success in this area by targeting dvxuser film fests with material written expressly for those fests, and for me it has been pretty successful.

I get to have my material made into a film. It's a great feeling when someone out there who doesn't know you comes up and feels your writing is good enough to spend their time, money, and effort on turning into a film. I get the chance to be involved in more than one project. And I can write different types of films. I've met some great people through my writing for the fests.

If we have a separate screenwriting contest, I'm in. If we tie a screenwriting contest to the regular filmfest, I'm in. But if asked my opinion, the screenwriting contest should be an independent entity. And I'll continue to offer material for the regular fests; it's been great fun!

I have been saying this same thing all along. I think they need to be completely separate. Most people agree, I think there are some who have tried to figure out a way to combine them, but the resounding opinion is to have the upcoming ScriptFest be entirely unconnected to the Film Fests.

There is a really good chance the filmmaker won't ever make the film, for any number of reasons.

I have written screenplays for three DVX festivals, and not one was filmed. Things happen. Stuff comes up. That's life.

I say avoid all that heartache and keep it seperate.

Okay, enough gabbing. Are we doing this or what?

Up to 10 pages. Any topic. Due April 1st.

What do you think?

I think there has to be a theme/topic, something to tie them together. Sounds good though.

Once we have TimeFest up and off the ground, we will probabaly have something ready to go with ScriptFest too.

Yes, right now we have to wait until the mods get things sorted out. Then we will have an official Fest. Also, I will be offering my screenplay services for TimeFest if anyone wants them. I will not ask for money or prizes if you win. More info to come in the TimeFest slot...

Does 10 pages sound right? That's between 5 and 15 pages screen time.

The reason I chose 10 pages is that 10 pages is enough for a good story, yet short enough to read in one go. If necessary a six-minute film could be made with minimal cutting (my 6-minute short ended up being 9 pages, and it was very dialogue intensive.)

Theme? If the deadline is April 1st, then how about something related to TRICKERY, or DECEPTION? Very TIMEly. :)

Is a month enough to write 10 pages and have a somewhat organized "festival"?
