I dropped on of the screw between the handle/mic to the FS700 body
the question - is this a 7mm or 1/4" screw?
the length if in mm is 20mm - inch it is 7/8"

but where can one find such a screw ? I tried the local hardware store no one carry either
the 7mm or the 7/8" long screw

I hate it when manufacturer use non standard part size

call SONY parts they pretty much have everything and they are fast to deliver. I need small little cable holder - they had and I got it quickly.

Problem solve - just need couple those spacer and 1/4" screw

however, I'm still stump on why the local hardware store doesn't carry those 7mm screw

That's because 7mm is a non-standard size. A 6mm screw is about ten-thousands (.010") smaller than a 1/4" screw. An 8mm screw is within two-thousandths (.002") of a 5/16 screw. It is very rare that a 7mm screw is used because of the difference in strength of the 6 and 8 millimeter screws. Who needs something in between? That would be like buying a 9/32" screw. Go ahead and try to find that too. :2vrolijk_08:

I work with this stuff every day so I have some familiarity.

Apparently Sony is using non standard screw ? :-)

I test the camera screw with one of the store display screw test - 7mm/20mm long fit perfectly - just not available

Companies will use non-standard components or create their own custom dimensions. In the industry (manufacturing) this is called "bastardizing." This makes it so that the end user either needs to go back to the manufacturer and buy parts from them, or at least believe you have to (can't find it in most stores).

I used to sell irrigation parts. We also sold pond aerators (fountains). One company had the spray head, which is what actually makes the pattern of water that is shot into the air, with a left hand pipe thread. This way you could not just buy a spray head and put it on any equipment. You had to buy everything you needed from them.

Sometimes while bastardizing manufacturers will make things so that any repair would require the destruction of the component.

I've seen a lot of this stuff. It makes for additional sales for the manufacturers, and headaches for the end users.

The thing is that - the store (Orchard S. / Lowe) would have that screw select panel with screw in adapter for 6mm, 7mm, 8mm
and only carry the 6 and 8. Why even have the 7mm in there ? with CNC machine , I'm surprise that hardware store doesn't offer custom make part - just enter the parameters (diameter, length, etc) and out come a parts in alum, etc. Why carry all that inventory when a bunch of aluminum block will do
