screenshots to restore faith in your AF100

Absolutely amazing shots Joe! I know you have mentioned them but what are your go to scene file settings for interiors and exteriors? You really pulled off some great shots, I love the stingray at the beginning! What's your process when approaching a scene, technically and creatively?

thanks in advance ;)

Thanks! and woah thats a loaded question. Technically alot of it is looking at the room seeing how wide the master is and figuring out where I can even hide lights. Almost everything I shoot is practical locations so I cant do that much rigging just finding out where the lights coming from in the wide then I spice it up for the closeups. As far as creative choices I'm more on the contrasy side when it comes to lighting ratios lately inside I've not even been using fill, I barely ever even use it things just look better to me when half of the subject is darker. Fill light is pretty much non existent to me lately and alot of it is combining, enhancing, or cutting away natural light and using it. Since alot of it is practical locations alot of locations have natural light coming from somewhere so I see if i can use any of it (depending on how long we'll be shooting if it'll stay somewhat consistent) for example this shot:

Screen Shot 2013-06-12 at 9.05.25 PM.jpgFor this night INT, the doorway with silk curtains was a bathroom that had big windows with daylight coming in, so I just added a 4 bank daylight bulbed kino to the left side of him with cheap bleach muslin cloth I got from a fabric store and double wrapped it to make it softer and darker. In post we darkened the doorway and desaturated it.

It's hard to describe the creative process because I just go by whatever feels right and can pass off as realistic. You'd have to give me an example i could probably elaborate better. I never change my scene file settings its always B.Press Gamma and the rest I don't change at all I may de saturate the Chroma occasionally but other than that they're all 0.

Thanks Joe, I think that answers my question, I guess with bigger budgets and schedules you would be possibly more elaborate in your set ups (based on turn around times etc) but right now in practical locations your being efficient while maintaining your taste; and it looks great!

Ive been studying the visual story by Bruce block and the film grammar bible for dialogue scenes involving 2,3,4,5 people while trying to find ways that balance practical coverage with what the script is saying about the characters.

We have a Glen Garry Glen Ross style shoot coming up, going to workshop your scene file with a little reduction in Chroma and see how it shapes up!

Joe, I think your reel shows what a great cameraman you are. Well done. It is clear to me that you have set an example of why we made the AF100 in the first place. The camera in the hands of someone that knows how to run it, can make very nice pictures.

Best of fortune to you,

Jan

I hope you don't mind me throwing a grab up on your thread. This is an ungraded shot from a shoot yesterday, my first B.Press shoot which I tried because of your really good results with it. It's helpful to go back and examine your "default" settings. I chose this shot to show that gamma did really well on the gradient in the background. B.Press is back on my AF100EliseOTS.jpg

Great showreel Joe, please tell me the second clip in, the old corvette ? against the red sunset was an AF100 ....
