screenshots to restore faith in your AF100

Haha isn't it the best?! Barry said B.Press was the cleanest of all the settings in his book and that was enough for me I've stuck with it ever since and have not been happy with other people's footage with Cine settings

I'm using Cine D for stuff with more mids type shooting and HDNorm for clean but I always need to pull the blacks back down which B.Press does natively. The thing I always loved about B.Press was the crisp eyelight and the fast fall off.

I have a police procedural interview scene coming up next week... I'm thinking B.Press the whole way :) I'm going to test again.

Nothing against the AF100, because it did a nice job here. But Joe your work is nice enough that a step up in camera quality would make all the difference. Hey, I know it's an AF100 forum folks, so no hate. Just looks like he is ready to take things to the next level.

All the Best!

Pretty sure these were my
scene file settings most of the time. It was a year ago so I can't say 100%.

I def know the AF100 is lacking power in certain areas mostly I was just making a point that its more lighting than camera.

I would be curious to see if you guys could pick out which two clips in my reel were shot on the Epic, Everything else is either AF100 or HMC150:

Wonderful images. African/American skin tones can look so gorgeous (like these) if they're lit properly, but that isn't always easy to do. Really nice work.

...and it IS about the lighting and the skill of the cinematographer. The rest doesn't matter, because a professional will choose the best tool for any given job based on the particular set of requirements.

When this thread started, I had a bet with myself about how long it would take someone to feel compelled to point out that there are better cameras than the AF100.

I don't think I've read a single thread discussing how to get good results from this camera but what some wag failed to resist the compulsion to obsess for the thousandth time about the shortcomings of the AF.

Maybe folks should give that a rest and celebrate some good work instead.

"... All the difference", huh? That's why the non-Pany shots in his reel are such obvious standouts, right?

I am so happy these were called wrong! Some people continue to hate on the AF100 like its a SUB level camera. Even if they try to disguise their hating as constructive pats on the back. Come on now! Step up your FRAME not your camera game.

Ok...i'm gonna go Red on the interior car shots with the black bald headed guy, the aerial opening shot, the girl looking out the window or prison bars at 2:00 or man running through the forest with gun. Did I hit even ONE? LOL

Nice reel.

I'm thinking at this point he probably shouldn't say which was shot with what camera. As soon as he does you can count on these expert trolls, desperate for attention, to start babbling about how they knew the difference all along and how the AF shots fall apart compared to the others because of yada, yada, yada, etc.

It's lots more fun listening to their silence from not knowing which was shot on what.

No hate here, but it's all relative. One person's gear that, to them- represents the next level, is just a beginner's tool to someone else.

Back to the OP... gorgeous reel and screen grabs!

What do you care if I feel his work is at the point where the camera will make a difference in his shots?

Look, some people could shoot with any camera and it wouldn't make a difference, because the camera is not the limiting factor in their case.

wow... I've watched it 5 times and I'm still having a hard time. OK, the B&W shot of the guy smoking and the pull back moving shot of the guy on the bike. Other candidates include the band on the back porch and the fast pull back of the guy sitting on the bed in silouette (another beaut). Am I even close?

Ok, come on guys who encourage upgrades to other cameras! Throw down here. Now's your chance!

So now we've gone from "would make all the difference" to maybe "wouldn't make a difference". I think that's termed damning with faint praise, but I maybe I just don't understand your point.

Haha thanks guys i feel the love, but no one has gotten it right yet!

So I think that with all those guesses it's a good sign that the Epic isn't "glaring" out amongst the other shots. $5,000 vs a $50,000+ setup.

Now, that being said of course I would love to have more latitude and uncompressed resolution but common, I paid $5,000 for this camera so the $45,000 extra I didn't pay for an Epic setup is in my bank account which is nice. I'll buy a 4k camera when they become the same price as an AF100 when it came out which is starting to happen now.

I think we're all used to hearing things on set or people in the audience saying "wow that camera is sick, or that lens is awesome." (....yea a $5,000 camera body with a $100 Nikon lens i got on ebay is not exactly the Lamborghini of camera equipment). Unless you're working in the business the general public will probably never be able to know what it takes to make something look good but thats okay, its just annoying when people who are in it or semi in the film world credit the equipment more than the user.

The shots that were shot on the Epic was this scene:
Screen Shot 2013-06-10 at 11.05.38 AM.jpg
2K blonde a few feet directly behind them pointed down for rain and backlight (natural bounce on her with his white shirt), 5K through Silk then through 4x4 1000H tracing paper for the closeups

Damn. Sothe moral of the story is a GREAT director can make the AF100 visually perform in an INDISTINGUISHABLE manner from the Red Epic. Pixel counters will still disagree and I will still show them my middle finger with confidence and a bank balance of $45k...lol
