C200: Scratch/scuff on C200 screen

Hi everyone,

First post here. I've been travelling and shooting with my C200 and the screen has picked up a scuff mark, it doesn't affect functionality but is visible even when it is on and is just annoying. What can I do? Any way to polish it out? Or is the plastic covering on the screen replaceable?

Thanks guys,

Adrian

I'm not sure if there are replacement parts other than the entire LCD assembly. You would need to call Canon or your authorized dealer to confirm though.

FWIW, I find the LCD to be fairly prone to micro scratches (mine returned from its first shoot with a number of micro scratches albeit none are visible when in use so I've just lived with it).

Mine too. It's just one of those things, although I guess we could have tried putting cell phone screen protective film over it when we first got the camera, should still be conductive as it is on a cell phone screen? My scratches are pretty minor, you see them with the screen off but not really with it on. People laughed because I was stressing out when I first got the C200 and realized that there was literally no protection for the screen when it's mounted on camera or with the camera in the case. But I am figuring as long as it is invisible when using it, who cares?

I guess I'm going to have to live with it, I doubt there's any real way of polishing it out. I don't mind scratches anywhere else on the body but having it on the screen is just annoying!!

Kind of a poor design in a way. They should have either made a more heavy duty screen cover or figured out a way for it to be protected in transport. But what are ya gonna do? It is what it is.

I bought one to use with my C300 Mark II and scuffed it up pretty quickly.

Never had that happen with the C300/C300 Mark II monitor. One advantage of the clamshell design but I'd still rather use the touch screen. Really ups the ease of use for the C300 Mark II.

I'm using a SmallHD 502/DP4 neoprene sleeve for the LM-V1 when it's not on the camera.

I asked Zucuto how much it would be to replace the screen on the Z-finder EVF (3.2" screen) and it was only $75. So maybe having it replaced by Canon isn't that expensive.

Anything can be polished, including feces (see an episode of Mythbusters, where they did so) .... but I digress. I've polished many materials to a perfect shine. But you'd have to be pretty daring to try the normal scratch removing procedure and hope you didn't mess anything up.

But I think this approach will be pretty low risk and worth a try, but of course, at your own risk.

Get some car polishing compound such as this: https://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Wax-T-417-Polishing-Compound/dp/B000NWKXRU. This is the least abrasive type of cutting compound. See if that removes the mark. It may dull the surface of the entire screen, which is normal since you are trying to remove the scratch. Then finish with a polish that will bring it up to its original shine. You need to use a microfiber cloth. Paper towels will scratch the surface. Be sure the surface is perfectly clean before you start to polish. Cover the borders with tape so as to not affect them. I have enough confidence in myself that I would have no issues doing this. But if you have never done this, it can be very intimidating and you could muck it up. The surface of the screen can take some decent pressure. But don't bear down on it. It's not necessary.

Before you do this, try it on another plastic surface to see how it behaves and see if you can get the surface back to its original shine. Once you have done this, you will have some confidence that you know what you are doing and will be able to do it on your camera without making a mess.

If that doesn't take it out, the next steps are too risky for a novice and I would not recommend them.

I guess some scuffing of the LCD is inevitable then. These things are tools and as much as I take care of my gear, I don't baby them. Still wished I put some kind of screen protector on it before though...

So has anyone put a protective screen on the C200 touchscreen and had good results?

I normally use my phone for the same function.

I might pull the LCD out of the closet and dust it off I can put protective film on it and get good results.

Handheld I tend to shoot Hasselblad style and use just the EVF.

Mine now has even more micro scratches on it, but it still works fine and once the screen is on, you don't see them.
