Scene from a feature I am working on

[quote author=khmuse link=board=Clips;num=1101168046;start=30#39 date=11/24/04 at 15:14:45]I am going to fine tune the section where "Daya" (the girl in Red) enters the frame.  I myself don't mind an empty frame or two, but if enough people agree that it is a problem then I'll certainly acquiesce to the general consensus.

It's not about mindiing an empty frame or two. I am a merciless editor myself, and my rule is "If it ain't contributing, it's taking away" Nothing extraneous. That's just me though.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

The girls did OK acting-wise. Fairly believable for their age.

You crossed the Line when Girl In Red jumped up and you have a close-up of her giving advice to Girl-In-Doubt.

Other than that, I liked the flow of the scene in terms of your editing choices. Have you tried a top-down establishing shot? You probably can't get it for this scene now, but consider that in the future, or maybe even a dolly-through-the-door establishing shot.

Keep up the good work.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

I love this cut.  Tight tight tight.  In my opinion it works perfectly.   Accompanied with a little ambient 'song from the radio on the dresser' and it's smoking!

Any plans to 'mess with imagery' ? (Color correction/enhancement) ? Just curious.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

A lot better.  I just wish you had a cut away or some how if you had a shot of the girl in red just sitting up and make it appear that she never walks over and she's just watcing across the room.  But that may be crossing the line now that I think about it.  Have to view it again.

I think I'll watch it again.

Does anyone know how to turn the windows file into a quicktime?

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

How bout the cut away of the book in the beginning or another cut away of the book insert before the girl in red walks over.

Then pan the girl in red's dialouge as walks over and sits down. Add some foley of her steps.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

Hello John,

Thanks for the comments on the final (maybe) pass. I too am really happy with the scene now. As for sound, there is still the whole sound design phase, but that will be after all the scenes are locked. Not sure yet what we will do on "color correction/enhancement" as I don't know what is best for the blowup to 35. I'll check with the lab before I get too deep in correcting anything. Some of the scenes certainly require corrections and there are shifts in density and contrast due to varying lighting conditions, but the interior sets are pretty consistent. The director did want to play a little with color saturation over the course of the film as it is part of the story line.

Well since the last scene worked out well, here is another shot on the same set:

Again, any comments are more than appreciated.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

On this new clip I am not seeing anything that jumps out at me in terms of 'editing'. It works nice as it. There is a nice combination of Cut/Spilt Edits and the pacing is on target.

One part that distracts me (and it is minor) is when she says she has a cat named stinky and the RED girl cuts her off as if she isn’t listening; the camera seems to hold on her a little long even until the point where she walks off screen.

It is this part that isn't jiving for me; the fact that she disappears off frame. I am not sure of you coverage on this scene but I wonder if that part can't be fixed; maybe move back to a 2 shot or the EST shot if you have that available and show her move across room?

That's all I have to say; this edit is pretty damn good as it IMHO.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

Is it just the compression from the web or something but right around the 2:09 mark of the clip, there seems to be some kind of a lens flare or something on the dark haired girl's face (girl on left.) I think overall it probably moves as smooth as it's going to get, I wouldn't have done some of the blocking the way it is, but it's fine. Also, I think the acting by the darker haired girl is a little off in this scene. who knows, could just be me. I definately want to see the final project, whether or not it gets blown up or not! Tim.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

Thanks for the input John. Actually, the “cat’s” name is Dinky, but I kinda like Stinky better! I’ll certainly try a quicker trim on that cut and see how it looks.

You are right Slimothy, there is a bit of lens flare on that one setup. I’ll check and see, but I suspect that it’s present on each take, so I may have to live with it. The girl playing the character of “Daya” (Eva Barda) did have a bit of a stumble or two in this scene, but the director felt it actually worked out OK as the character is trying to cover up being a bit nervous by her rather rapid fire dialogue pace, so he decided to move on.

Thanks for the suggestion Gary. I really hadn't put any scene transitions in the timeline yet, as the director has some strong feelings in this area and their lengths will likely depend upon the score (not yet finished).

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

Good eye Slimothy on that; there is definatley something on her forehead. :-/

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

It looks like a set of lips....Maybe he just caught a horny ghost on camera!

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

Despite having a nice 19" broadcast monitor (Panasonic BT-M1950v) and a fairly large number of eyes on the set, this is flare that didn't get caught. I am hoping that another take might be better, but I have my doubts.

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

I have a question. Would a mattebox have prevented that? Or did you have one on already?

Re: Scene from a feature I am working on

We did have a matte box but the flare still got in. It could have been from a C-Stand or something else just out of the image. If I recall correctly, the scene was lit with a 2k and three 650's, we had a number of flags and cutters and a set of blinds to cast some of the shadows. It’s the little things that seem to be the hardest to catch. I am fairly certain that it could be fixed on a frame by frame basis, but I am not certain that I have the skills to do it myself. I am also not sure it would be worth the effort (am I getting lazy?).
