Scarlet vs 5d lowlight??

Does anyone know if the scarlet will be as good as the 5d in lowlight?? Sorry if this question was already posted. I haven't saw anything posted. I just trying to debate on buying both the 5D now and Scarlet when its released. Or the Canon5D now with 3 L series lenses. Thx

I don't know that anyone can answer this for you but... the 5D is not a video camera, although, it does shoot some beautiful footage.

The 5D, however, is available now and you will need lenses with whichever camera you get. Scarlet has unknown specs and release dates.

I was going through the same decision. Wait for Scarlet or 5D now. I got the 5D and it is a great still camera. Pretty frustrating to use as a video cam but can be done with excellent results. For now, I am holding on to the HPX500 and waiting to see what Scarlet is... but I think Scarlet will be frustrating to use as a still cam, so I'll need the 5D anyhow....

Really unclear for now, we will have to wait until it's available.

Hope I'm wrong but.. I doubt many of us not on the list will have an opportunity to unbox Scarlet until next year, so that may be something to keep in mind.

Is filming really that frustrating ?? is it that frustrating that sometimes you want to slam it??? ( but you wont slam it of coarse!!:embarasse) LOL

I hope its not a brain reck to shoot with because we will be filming our own music videos. 1-3 artist and me playing one of the artist, a camera man and light set up man.... No moving camera just point and shoot with a tripod. How frustrating with that be from a scale of one 1 to 10 xianchi ??? I hope not 7 or 8!

Thx again guys.

A lot of talk about the scarlet says it will be sensitive but not as light sensitive as the 5D. The scarlet will be expensive once you buy all the needed things, shoulder mount, screen, CF reader, CF cards, Lenses, rods, rod Mounts, Lens mount, EVF. It will be 5K resolution which is fantastic! But it will be expensive but atleast it will have manual control. Canon needs to step up to the challenge

Frustrating maybe, challenging for sure.....for the situation you just mentionned the 5d would be good, maybe you will need to be clever and patient to get the same exposure for all the shots.
Buying manual lenses with lense adaptors would make it easier then using canon ef lenses in that context.
As a still camera nothing really beats the quality price ratio of the 5d as of today. If you do stills as well it is a good investment even if you dont end up using it for video in the long run.

The Scarlet and 5D are totally different cameras that shouldn't be compared. Besides a different market segment, different strengths and so forth, the Scarlet isn't out yet and isn't going to be for a while, at least not the cheaper brains. Meaning they will have learned from how the market and technology has changed; as Canon will as well with different cameras.

It seems like there's a consensus that the 5DII is there quality wise ...if only it had manual controls. According to canonrumors.com, there is a firmware upgrade in the works for the 5DII, and the new 60D will have the video features the 5DII currently has. I'm happy to work around the 5DII's limitations given it's superb image and low light capability.

I think for that kind of shooting it would be in the 5 range of frustratability... I'm sure you have read about the tricks required to get the camera to shoot the way you want. If you haven't I strongly recommend looking around on this and other forums. When you are doing long takes, it won't be such a big deal and really there isn't anything that will give you comparable IQ results for the money, assuming you have lenses...

For the type of shooting I normally do, the frustration is in the 9-10 range, having to reset(trick) the camera after every shot is ridiculous.

me have been testing the scarlet.. wow great cam.. noise free.. no lights in the bedroom.. only available light.. 0.5 lux.. she was gorgeous anyhow.

no idea on the canon.. btw what canon?.. me had no idea canon is making digital cameras like red till now

how and where have you tested the scarlet?? I'm lost?? Your losing me!!

He borrowed my Scarlet... I have the special prototype low-light Mysterimoon sensor. It works great, but only at 19 FPS so far. I do hope they put it into productiuon, though!

I painted my 5d mk II read and renamed it Scarlet and the low light is identical to my old 5d mk II, ain't that crazy??? Will wonders never cease?

I would think that the Scarlet will have a lot of variability in it's low light ratings since the camera will be available with several different sized sensors. The larger the sensor, the more light sensitive. But at this point, speculating about the Scarlet is just hyperbole, the camera doesn't exist. You can't buy one, nobody outside of a few RED engineers even know exactly what it is. And as RED proudly states, "Specs will keep changing. Count on it".

if canon release a firmware update for manual control by next year, which i highly doubt it happen, RED will be kicking themselves in the balls.

Firmware update is on the way for the 5D (some characters on cinema5D just gave the word. Scarlet will be a different beast. Count on it. Much more flexibility as a filmmaking tool, but full frame it will cost 5 times more as well.

What Mark ii is not capable? 1-120fps, 3k on long side of the frame, it just up to Canon people to let it work on full power. it can maintain 133 Mbps, scalet only 100 Mbps. I think it's just a business, it may come out in next generation of camera, something like 6D. It should have faster processor and removable hard drive, bigger HD LCD and compact Steadicam build in bottom of it. But I hope Canon has mercy on us and give us firmware that will take all limitation away and let it be 1-120fps and 3k and so and so...
