SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

OK so ......

Indie Joe: Yes, Hello RED .. I like to order the Scarlet S35mm brain please.
Red: That is great ! That would be $7000
Indie Joe: Great, here is my credit card.
Red: Now, do you want the button to turn on the camera ?? Its our XYZ Module and its $3500, Also we have the XLR and HDSDI module for only $3500 so that you can have sound and you can see what is being recorded via our $3000 EVF or $2600 7" LCD. And the EVF and LCD cables are available for $250 each.

LOL. I do keep forgetting about the important accessories. That little wireless remote can go somewhere.

The big thing is how much does the breakout box cost and one of the 4.8" LCDs. Hell, even the 2.8" LCD.

The rest is just your basics that can probably be purchased from one of the 35mm Adapter manufacturers, I.E Rail supports, mattebox, etc etc. Even grips, although the little RED grips look cool.

I actually haven't been in this industry long enough to see who best bests who in the video world. Take everything I say with a grain of salt and shot of Jose Cuervo. I often dismiss my own advice. I get 90% of my self-esteem from my dogs, which are now gone.

S35 Scarlet....Batteries, Recording medium, viewfinder... and the audio coverted box.... thats enough for me...

( i didint realise the S35 had Canon mount as well....)

I guess I'm a little frustrated because my little boy will be turning 3 in March and I was hoping to shoot his birthday party in 28K.

Ha, ha! That's what I am afraid of. I do think many will be surprised when they can actually order a Scarlet at how much the entire package will cost. Nothing wrong with that but for those on DVX User who are used to the "buy an EX1 or HPX170, some cards and you are ready to shoot", there will be a rude awakening.

The RED business model, true to their design specs, takes the film camera approach where you must rent or buy every little hunk of metal needed to make the camera usable. It's great for filmmakers but it also makes packages double or triple in cost, no different than an Arri SR3. Not too many $17,500.00 RED Ones doing work out there. Based upon the package I rented and used and what I see at the LA RED User Group meetings, the average RED owner has much closer to $50k into their package. Scarlet will be no different, great design but a fully operational one with enough storage, battery, mounts, shoulder pads, rods, EVF, LCD, etc. may cost north of $15k to $20k depending on which brain you purchase.

Quite a way from "3k for $3k" isn't it?

So I wrote a post but my piece of **** laptop is a piece of **** and well it died mid send.

Long story short.
Great anouncement we will see when it comes out.

I am excited for what the competition comes up with...time will tell.

Beefs with the release spec...
30fps on s35scarlet????// WTF

Considering that it's claiming to have a better sensor than the Red One, at $10,000 LESS, how can you have a beef with that? It's a 5K chip, recording to Redcode 42, for $7,000, vs. a Red One at $17,500 recording 4K to RedCode 36.

Sounds like a fantastic bang-for-the-buck option, not something to beef about.

yep. the announced specs look awesome and the concept is really cool, but it will end up being much more than $3,000. :(

I think that "3k for $3k" would have helped to bring in the higher end consumers and student filmmakers. It would have been a good way to popularize the brand, just like Apple offers the iPod Shuffle. Not everyone can afford an iPhone or an iPod Touch but almost anyone can scrape together $79.00 for a Shuffle. From a strategic standpoint, the Shuffle and low end Macbook are really smart marketing tools. The fixed lens Scarlet hopefully will be thought of in that way. If you start with the lowest end, cheapest RED, they should hope that you love it and aspire to buy their higher end product which they make more profit on.

I am convinced that if RED becomes too niche of a product, they will eventually go under or be bought. The worldwide market for $15k to $60k digital cinema cameras is not that large. Do you know how many Si-2k, Vipers, F23 and F35s are sold worldwide? The number would blow you away at how small it is. I don't know what it is combined but I have heard a few of the individual numbers and they are in the low 100s worldwide.

And since they are preaching, "your camera will not be obsolete" they won't even be selling us new camcorders every 2-3 years as Sony and Panasonic are so good at doing, just maybe a new sensor. Not a business model that I would consider really healthy in the long term. I hope that I am proven wrong, I would love to see RED succeed and become a new kind of American business success story, we certainly need them now that GM and Ford are almost bankrupt. American companies used to know how to succeed but there have not been very many new iconic ones coming up in the new century.

My beef isn't so much that I think it sucks, it clearly doesn't. I suppose I want to have my cake and eat it too. I don't need 5k I am more then alright with 3k, I would however love the s35 imager and the ability to use all my Nikon glass as well as 60fps for slight over cranking. If it was like the RED ONE where you could get different frame rates in different resolutions I would be ok with that as well. Looks like for me I would have to go Epic. Luckily for me I couldn't even dream of having that amount of money anytime in the near future. Excited to see what comes of it.

Who's to say the Scarlet 2/3 fixed lense still won't be below $4,000? If the brain is $2500, it doesn't seem impossible. If not, it certainly could come in at the same price as the hpx170 or ex1 shooting 3k. I think it is an exciting development and not something to lament.

Im not sure what the global expectations were. But I certainly didnt think there would be this many options. Ive never been a "RED FANBOY", nor will I ever. Ive never looked at a company and thought WOW, they are doing this for ME, either.

BUT, that 2/3" with upto 120 fps, certainly appeals to me. I wouldnt use it to shoot a documentary or ENG or many other things - I have a HPX that pretty much covers everything I do right now, im a market accepted work flow. But the scarlet certainly makes me think for commercial work it would be a very nice addition. Not sure what other people see in the markets, but the music vid budgets seem to be only getting smaller, and this would fit the bill for that perfectly as far as ROI goes.

Actually the pricing seems in line with what I expected, looking at how the RED ONE was marketed etc.

Just thinking aloud here really.

They aren't getting that RED is listing MAX RECORDING RESOLUTION AND FRAME RATES.

Not tha it ONLY DOES 5K @ 30P.

It does 4K @ 60 more than likely and 3k @ 120fps.

IT IS NOT LIMITED TO 5k @ 30P

Personally, in the meantime I wish they would have gone with the original Scarlet specs and release date, 3K with a fixed lens for $3 grand. That could have been close to release by now and would have done well in the HVX, HPX, EX1 market price point.

So many folks were screaming, "interchangeable lenses", and then the Canon 5D II beta was released and threw the original Scarlet out. I still think it would have been a fantastic, ground-breaking camera and they would have done very well. I think the new modular concept is great too, I'm not being critical, but it seems there's still a big market for an out-of-the-box camera with the old Scarlet specs. I'll see if I can't put one together tonight in my garage. First I need to run to Home Depot and grab a ballpeen hammer and a hacksaw.

My thoughts exactly.

Oh Canon, you came so close to hitting the sweet spot. Just put the 5d sensor in an A1 body, remove the fixed lens, decrease the rolling shutter, add 24P, and improve the codec. Is that too much to ask?:)

The fixed lens scarlet will be nice if it remains around 3 grand, like an EX1 that shoots redcode raw. I'll take that.

We could hope that the competition would at least offer us a regular HD camera with a 35mm sensor and SLR mount. How hard could it be.

I hope you're right... the problem with modular ala carte choices is you always want the next level above what you can afford. That next step up is SO SWEET! :)

Many seem to be comparing hypothetical specs of scarlet to real world specs of cameras that are available now, which is not an honest or fair comparison for the competition or consumers. When the scarlet does come out, there will be newer cameras/upgraded models to level with. You cannot compare the future with the present, you have to compare the future with the future.
