Scam?

I've been doing research on the camera for about a week now, and have decided to buy it. I have found that the retail price is about $5,000-$6000 +p2 card.

I was going to get it from this site : http://www.expresscameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=567445 $1,400

And another with a shady name : http://www.trustedphoto.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=567445 $1,600
"Trusted Photo?"

Should I NOT buy one of these and get one from an actual "Trusted" website for about 2500-4000? And another question, I have Sony Vegas 5, does that support the P2 mxf file, or do I have to buy that $300 HD Converter thing?

There is no 2500-4000 trusted website either.... check reseller ratings.

Buy from an authorized dealer. You will get scammed if you buy from one of those links.

Look at the where to buy sticky in the hvx section.

We get this question every week.

Buy from an authorized dealer. Expect to spend 5,000 at a minimum from an authorized dealer. You can get it for *little* less if you buy from a non-authorized dealer, but you are likely to get a grey market camera that will not be eligible for rebates or warranty coverage should something go wrong.

If you use Vegas, you will need DVFilm's Raylight (which is 200 buck) to be able to edit p2 footage with it. Raylight will allow you to drop the p2 mxf files straight onto the timeline in Vegas without having to trasncode anything first. If you don't have it, you won't be able to edit your footage in Vegas.

Please do some more research before jumping on the boat. I'd hate to see you with a bitter taste in your mouth because you were not well enough equipped before making your purchase.

it's been exactly one year since i asked this same question before i got my hvx, lol.

it's so funny to see somebody ask the exact same thing every week and know the original poster is glad he found this website and asked this question before buying.

there should just be a sticky that says "NO...A LEGIT HVX DOES NOT COST UNDER $5K AT THIS TIME" :)

I found those scam sites, too, fortunately I don't trust anything that is far off retail price for a relatively new item. If it was the XL-1 selling for $1,200 new I would think nothing of it. But an HVX200 for 25% of retail price? Yeah, right.

I got a good deal from B&H, $5,199, but my business partner got a better deal on his in person, from Birns & Sawyer, amazingly enough. They usually have pretty high prices actually, but they gave him the camera for $5,000 flat and the battery for $50, because we gave this guy such a hard time, we've bought all kinds of items there before, rented there, etc., and we always give one dude a tough time about how he's just trying to scam us out of more money. We're just playing with him, he knows it, but it's funny because he wanted to finally come across as The Nice Guy and that was a killer deal.

Read the stickies both in the HVX forum and in the DVX forum.
Do a search on here for the companies you were looking at, and always check reseller ratings.

DO NOT get sucked into that "I'm going to get a better deal than anyone else" mentality - that is what these places feed off of. The cameras cost what they cost, and there is no way to get around it.

If you can't afford a new one from an authorized dealer you could keep an eye out for a used camera in the marketplace here. Though that always brings its own risks with it.
