Hi, I am a first time poster so I hope this helps.I have shot film (35,16,8mm) for the last 7 years.I have never shot video until recently with the dvx and xl2.After i saw the dvx on the big screen(murderball premiere)I was kind of hooked on the look. Today ,at the panasonic open house I got to speak to the director of camera engineering and with Jan(nice lady)and other personel. It was a pretty intense conference that went on for over 5 hours!. All about gamma , ,dvx, hvx, and varicam. We even got to handle the cameras.
The Hvx is a great camera but the conference was really pushing p2 more than any one camera, they really pounded that this is the future of all capture,P2 cards. They really made a great case for it.They said it is expensive but this is for pro's not prosumers(they stated prices of p2 cards will drop every six months as more adopt it). I asked the engineer point blank is it better than the dvx and he said it was different not better(The image will look great he said). The camera is very thick and meaty with too many controls to list here Also ,I was given a lesson on why pannys gamma will always be better than canons gamma(xl2) The Hvx will not be available until the end of this year. Before december ends was the quote we were given.Panny was pushing to be the leader of P2 more than pushing any camera.(it was great to use the varicam ) They will continue the dvx but they really want to concentrate on P2 as a panny revolution.
I feel the lesson on Gamma and how 80% of shooters don't understand gamma was the best for me.It is not about copying films gamma curve either they said.
As for prices,it maybe high but panny said they want to be the leader in all professional video(no lower prices to come.... future cameras will cost more than 6k).It was too much info to post here but I hope this helps a little....They really didnt hype the hvx200,even calling it our "little camera" I wont mention any names but one person from panny was excited by the andromeda(uncompressed) more than the hvx200. But it was stated only the pro's should think about modifying the dvx not a prosumer.
One final comment at the conference "people who get caught up in specs never make a movie"
