Saturn to become a new sun!

So I was doing research on for a sci-fi spec tv pilot I'm writting, and I happened to stumble upon a particular article:

http://www.universetoday.com/2008/0...cassini-turn-saturn-into-a-second-sun-part-1/

Basically Nasa and the Illuminati are 'apparently' planning on creating a new sun by blowing up Saturn with a nuclear bomb so that, somehow, earth becomes less habitable and titan (the moon orbiting saturn) becomes MORE habitable, and that then we have to pay loads of money or something to live on the moon.

then after some searching I came across this, a 'scientific' look at things:

http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/saturn/lpnew.htm

This one is something else... it's based on so much bad science that it's almost disgusting... also I think it's based off of A.C. Clark's 2010 (which some of the conspiracy nuts make videos using the movie as evidence). They call his stories "predictions."

Are there people out there so poorly educated that they don't understand the difference between fact and fiction?

Maybe we've been so well educated by the powers that be that we don't realize this is true science, and the science we have been taught is a lie, a sham. Dictated by this very same group, the Illuminati waiting in the shadows, pulling the strings. Perhaps the problem is that there are people so well educated by lies that they no longer have the eyes to see the truths beheld in these web pages.

... or maybe these super nerds need to get a life.

Yes. They don't even grasp the nature of the available tools useful in separating fact from fiction. They constitute a majority, at least in the USA. Probably pretty much everywhere.

Some say it's the free masons-

Damn those masons! Creating stars! Blasphemy!

Dang, there's some paranoid people out there. The moon landing hoax at least sounded plausible...Maybe I should claim land on Titan and sell it to these deluded fools.

Never mind that (a) Saturn doesn't have sufficient mass to go stellar and that (b) atmospheric pressure, even near Saturn's core is insufficient to compress a subcritical Pu mass to criticality, regardless of phase...

...why am I bothering?

There's a line where paranoia shades into outright idiocy. I think we've actually found it.

And NASA calls it "The Lucifer Project!"

"Hey, Dave, wanna join the Lucifer Project?"
"Sure, I'll get involved in anything that references Satan in its project name. You know it can only have the best of intentions for humanity."

...and if you want to construct a bomb for maximum efficiency - which you'd certainly want to do, if you're planning to ignite fusion in a new sun - you need a core of Pu 239, not the Pu 238 used in spacecraft power systems...

...and of course an object at Titan's orbital radius would be vaporized if Saturn were somehow replaced by an actual star...which would make Titan a bad place to be for our sooper-dooper-NASA/Freemasonic conspirators...

Let's say the whole igniting Saturn into a sun thing was possible, just for fun, but then Titan is covered in lakes of liquid methane. I don't think I'd like to take a swim in that.

Still though, the basic concept could be used for a far future set soft science fiction story or film. Probably would be best to not actually use Saturn as the place to do it in fiction though. Better to use a made up world in a far away star system.

Please...people can suspend disbelief for sentient robots that come from a planet called Cybertron, who can transform into cars and call themselves Autobots and do battle with other evil robots called Decepticons. They'll buy Saturn turning into a Sun.

There's suspending your disbelief.

Then there's dragging it out behind the barn, and shooting it in the face.

Yeah, I'd call it a made up planet.

I don't blame people for not understanding that things like this are not possible. I don't blame people for not knowing right away if the thing some politician was quoted with in their email is real or not. I do blame people for not going through the effort of finding out for themselves and just blindly accepting whatever they see. False email forwards about real people are the big ones, I saw a lot of those in the last election. So it's not that they're stupid or overly ignorant. It's laziness.

Actually, it's also stupidity and ignorance.

Just for the record, 2010 (speaking mostly from the novel here, not so much the film) used Jupiter. :D (Which, IIRC, was known as "Lucifer" once it had become a sun.) And it was done for the benefit of creatures on Europa. A planet the size of Jupiter couldn't become a full-blown star like the Sun, but it could become just enough of a star to warm up Europa and allow the lifeforms there to leave the sea much like our distant ancestors did.

"Arrogance and stupidity, all in one package. How efficient of you."

Still one of my all-time favorite tv quotes.

...you mean Decepticons don't exist?

*dreams shattered*

Well, I was thinking that it feels like something that would fit in with a far future space opera, and with that comes all the other exotic but probably not realistic things like convenient travel to exotic star systems.
