Sankor/Kowa Anamorphic Lens Discussion and Footage

@Pirata, I saw your screen grabs from the Sankor and the Iscorama.

Based on price and quality, which would you recommend?

Iscorama if you can get your hands on it. The quality and ability to focus only the anamorphic element with the prime set to infinity instead of focusing both elements puts it in a whole other league. It was designed for full frame so you can use a wider variety of lenses and it's sharper. the Sankor has a cool/unique look but it's a ***** to mount and shoot with.

But because the Iscoramas are so hard to come by now Sankors/Kowas are a fun distraction.

Nabbed a Sankor 16C off eBay! I've also ordered what I hope is the correct step-up ring - a 40.5 to 52mm. Can someone confirm that? Of course the 52 could vary, just wondering about the 40.5mm to fit on the Sankor.

I'll be using it with a 5D which sounds like it needs at least a 100mm lens to cover the whole frame, I'm hoping my 85 will also be usable. I'll post some footage and my own findings here once I've received the lens and had some time to play with it.

40.5mm yes it is the correct thread diameter that fits mine.
on a 85mm you should be fine if you don't keep the whole 3.55 format and crop a little bit.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll have to do some tests but for right now I'm thinking I might shoot 1080 and then crop within a 720p project.

You would rather need a step down ring from 52 mm to 40.5 (52 mm male thread to attach to your lens, 40,5 female thread to attach to the sankor). I don't know if these are readily available.

looking at the pics, both look wrong imho there is a mismatch on the B+W (and ripoff price).
btw, the only one i could possibly find ready made was a STEP DOWN RING from diameter 49mm male thread (to prime lens side) to 40.5mm female thread (to sankor side).
it was $5 shipped from ebay hong kong last year and i never saw any other appear ever since.

I think there is an ebay seller jinfinance that can produce custom step up-down rings at a reasonable price. You have to order a minimum quantity of 10. Maybe try to contact them.

I find that sites often use a generic step ring photo for all their step rings (it's not like they go and take a photo of each one!).

So if it says "52-40.5mm Step-Down" then it should be exactly that.... 52mm male that attaches to the front of your taking lens, and 40.5mm female for your anamorphic to screw into.

I'd go ahead and buy that even thought it's pricey. As rhervag said they are hard to come by.

It would be really amazing and awesome if someone who is well versed in all the options for anamorphic on the 5d would do some sort of round up of all the options. I have read almost every single post on all the various anamorphic threads and still not sure what conclusions we have come to. The only thing I know for sure is that the 3 isco's are the holy grail. (seems like everyone else knows that too) after watching several go waaaay out of my price range on ebay I am really in need of another solution. I know next in line are the Kowa 8z and then the sankor (still not sure if anyone got them to mount properly and had any consistent success) Can some jedi master anamorphic God chime in for all the young padawans. thanks.

Kind of like the early days of the using the 5d, after a couple of months of experimenting, a genius would make checklist of do's and dont's. just wishing here, or if there are few more definitive posts people can remember please send them my way.

thanks

What's the deal with these Anamorphic Projection Lenses that i see for sale on ebay all over the place? Will those work, or are they unusable?

You'll have to separately focus both the anamorphic lens and the camera lens with most of those. It's time consuming getting the focus matched on both lenses and you need a good monitor to do this accurately.

Sean-

and be warned some of them can only focus from several feets away up to infinity.
you do not want one optimised for long throw which is unusable below 15ft or 50ft distance

I have a Kowa and I'm still trying to figure out where / how to get a proper stepping ring. The back threads are something like 53 / 53.5 mm. Is there any rings like 52 to 53 or similar? I couldn't find anything so I bought a 52 to 54 ring and debating whether superglue it on the lens....Is there anything less permanent?
