Sankor/Kowa Anamorphic Lens Discussion and Footage

Make sure you have the lens oriented correctly because it appears the Christmas balls are not quite round. This sometimes happens if the Anamorphic is ever-so-ever slightly off from vertical.

TRUE! :( I need to stop rushing and take some time to do that. :) (lol)

Interesting note: The Pentax Kx has a weird mode (it's not 16:9...i think it's 3:2?) Anyway...I've wondered what that would look like? I suppose it would just "desquash" to 16:9.

I agree that it is fun though... :)

So, i finally got my sancor 16D. I measured today with a ruler and it seems to be 49.5mm. Did anyone succeded finding a step up ring to 52mm or 58mm?

Also i don´t understand why optically we have to focus on both lenses.

you should be able to use 50mm with it on 7D ,try to disassemble it and modify so you could focus closer ,i modified proskar (42mm rear diameter) and i have focus from 62cm to infinity with my 50mm lens , you can fit whole head in frame. On 5d i think 85mm lens is minimum, im not sure.
Its lens for projection i guess thats why we have to focus on both lenses, you can make marks on anamorphic like i did so you would know where both lenses (50mm and anamorphic)match with focus and you can work faster than finding focus everytime.
And for attaching it to the lens, i just glued anamorphic to 50mm ,i would prefere to have it on ring like before but i wrecked some filters and dont have any more rings ,besides i like it more on 50mm than 58mm (where i used it with ring from filter). If you dont like to DIY then i guess you would have to wait for other guys to let you know where did they get rings,i just wrecked some filters and took the rings then glued rings to anamorphic and thats it.If front lens in anamorphic would be closer to rear lens in anamorphic then you can focus closer.
I took threading ring off my 50mm lens so i could have rear glass of anamorphic lens closer to front glass of 50mm.I couldnt remove this ring from other lenses tho.

Well, i order from ebay a 58-49, 52-50 and 58-52 step down rings to see if any of them works with my 50 or 85mm lenses.
I also order one of those cheap anamorphic generic 16:9 lenses to play with it.

16:9 attachments like the panasonic x1.3 arent so visible on 7D because of crop factor ,they look good on 5D.And you would have to focus with them too because i had one which didnt had adjustable focus and i had focus only on infinity and too far from cam to be really useful , it was hard to modify it and not worthy on APS-C sensor IMO.
I guess panasonic one have adjustable focus.
I wish that 7D would have 3:2 ratio to record full sensor ,it would be so much better with 2x anamorphics cause ratio is too cropped on top and bottom right now.

Folks - I'm stuck,

This is pretty awkward. I got my new Kowa 16-H (8Z) and is has a filterthread. Some folks on the web told me that their Kowa doesn't have any fronthread. Now I got mine and I'd like to attach a diopter. But still I'm not sure about the threadsize and I can't put any filter on as I don't have any here.
So anybody here knows the exact front filter thread?

I also posted the problem over at cinema5D:

cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8670&p=61975#p61975

maybe someone can help.

Buy a set of cheap step up rings and use those to check the size. If you're lucky it'll be a regular size like 52, 55 or 58.

Otherwise it could be a Series size (roman numerals, eg; Series IV)

I will do that tomorrow. I guess its a 55mm... will be pretty hard to find a diopter for that size, or? Any ideas where to look?

Hey dvxkoji! FYI, I have 72mm diopters for my ISCORAMA 36. I didn't get diopters for my Sankor 16C....so I tried just using my 72s (hand held) infront of my (appx) 52mm Sankor lens....it worked just fine. It's probably not perfect, but it worked just fine. (Just in case finding 55mm diopters is hard or very expensive. :) Good luck! Post some pics/footy when you get a chance!

I have the Kowa 8Z and it's not 58mm nor is it 52mm, so 55mm may be the right size.
I do use my 58mm diopter kit on it but I've come up with a simple method of holding it in place using rubber bands...it does the job.

so your diopter kit is a normal close up lens from ebay?
I can't track any "diopters" down using ebay. Are these so called diopters anything special? What's the diff. between diopter and close up lens???

The best kind are achromatic diopters and these are formed from two pieces of glass. Diopters or close up lenses (different name, same thing I think) that have only one piece of glass suffer from chromatic aberration and possibly other defects.

Century Precision Optics by Schneider make achromatic diopters.

They are also known as achromats. Try a search for "achrom*" on ebay with worldwide listings turned on.

Ideally you want a +0.5, but these are hard to find. Next best is a +1 and then a +2. Anything beyond that and you're focusing really close to the lens.

EDIT: Remember that you can also buy a size that's larger than 55mm and use step rings, if you can't find what you need at 55mm exactly.

Dude, are you from Poland?

So i finally received the japanese x1.3 anamorphic adapter. The good thing is that it´s 52mm so all i have to do is screw it in my canon 50mm and there we go. No issues at all and perfect 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
No cropping. No massive barrel distortion. Ni vignetting.
As with any anamorphic lens, you need to step down the aperture to get a sharp image. At 2.8 is a bit soft, and at 5.6 it´s just ok.

My only problem is that i also received the sankor lens and i´m thiking in selling one or the other. None of them is great, but the 16.9 is probably not worth buying.

do you have it on 5D or 7D ? I had x1.3 adapter on 35mm lens and APS-C sensor and i wasnt impressed by outcome.

this cam with firmware for 24p is gonna be great ,whats the widest lens that you could use with anamorphic without vignetting ? Probably 28mm.
